AWR speedvision header- LATEST update

I spoke w/ Tony again today, and the project has currently stalled. He is working w/ a gentleman from Mazda R&D to develop the header for street use. He agreed that the cat was the primary power robbing source on the car, and developments were in the works to improve this. PLEASE POST HERE IF YOU HAVE INTEREST IN THIS HEADER!!! Tony wanted me to send some documentation from us concerning what we want out of this header and how much of a priority it is for Protege owners. He will then forward this info to the proper individuals w/ Mazda, which will aid in these developments becoming more of a priority.

Thanks,

If I get to keep my car I will definitely buy this header. I will do this if they eliminate the cat or at least show some dyno proven horsepower gains.

I am interested. If it is bolted directly on, and I can still use my stock exhaust, or atleast close, and will this header be "CARB exempt"?

I assume not, since you are messing with smog stuff...

Also, would we have to take this thing off every 2 years to pass smog? If so, hopefully it would be less than a few hours on/off.

I also assume the header would have to be sold as "off-road use only", but I am okay with that since hey I will only be using for "off-road use", wait...this isn't a 4X4...hmmm...just don't tell CARB.

Also, even without the precat, I bet these cars still have lower emissions than most american cars...

I got hehind like a 3 year old Chevy the other day and it had the rotten egg smell going up a hill, MAN...american emission stuff has always been low quality.

Thanks for the update Trix, and tell Tony that there is a demand, and that I'd buy a header EPA friendly or other wise. The market is out there, and the first company to offer a good clean fitting SS header with an O2 sensor port and an EGR port will sell me a pipe. If I'd have thought it would be this long for someone to get around to it, I'd have done it myself and captured the market. I hope this working with Mazda thing doesn't become a set back either, I was kinda counting on AWR. It also strikes me as odd that there will probably be after market turbo kits on out before a simple heaader pipe.

I'm in also. We need that header. One ? If iliminates the first cat where will the O2 sensor be placed? also the problem that NCmp3 had with the EGR valve that was angled it needs to be straight. Thanks "I'm IN"

I would be very interested and i think another concern we should look at would be also being able to use this on the Protege5. We have the same engines except for ecu so i assume it would be a perfect fit. Also i dont plan on turboing my car for quite awhile so i want to make sure that this would give decent gains or atleast be equal with price. The most important thing is that the header will be able to work in conjunction with most mods we do and to be able to always maximize on power. Bolt on would be very important as well but i would be fine if it wasnt a pure bolt on because i find from experience with hondas that alittle more works usually results in better gains. I also think everyone is getting way ahead of themselves by saying they would get it and count them in. I am sure if the AWR header was 50 bux cheaper then the mazdaspeed most fo us wouldnt even think bout it unless we saw at the very least 10 whp out of it. So i think price is the most important factor in all this. If it is decently priced then i would be in for sure and decently i mean like the DC header ranges for honda. ($450) Thats just my .02 cents

Definitely count me in... the only criteria that I need the header to meet is that it has ports for the O2 sensor and EGR valve. I am so psyched about this coming around for us!!!

I agree with P5PCU, there must be a good gain for the price and an appropriate price for the HP gain.. It should be proportional so to say.

I will definitely buy if it fits a Pro5 - can't see why it shouldn't.

I think keeping it a bolt-on, easy mod, and as smog-legal as possible is a big concern. We've got YEARLY smog inspections here on Long Island, and I'd hate to have to take this thing off once a damn year.

Of course, price and true HP gains are important, too - I don't think anyone will get it just for looks.

If the gains are good enough to warrent the price, I'd totaly go for it. Headers are a great mod, I've been told it's the best bang for your buck bolt on mod there is. :)

Sure a header is the best bang for the buck, but the way I look at it, the header is an absolute necessity for any real work. I don't expect just a head pipe to do a whole lot performance wise, just a few HP and a better sound.

I want a good clean fitting stainless steel set of pipes so the poor engine can breath, and then I can get on with head work, lumply cams and the rest.

I can't see getting any more power out without replacing that bulbous manifold first, and I damn sure ain't interested in building one myself again. With the long stroke of your engines, I'm shying away from a turbo for now and going for naturaly asperated low end torque, and damn it I need a pipe.

If anyone else is going the N/A route like me, you know AWR is our best bet. So don't be going off about a $50 or a few horse difference. Step up to the plate, lets get Tony rolling. I don't know about everyone else but I'm tired of waitng - and getting spanked by civics. I really hate that.

Down for the header...as before mentioned, the 02 sensor and EGR valve are in consideration i hope...also, screw the pre-cat....more power the better...no emissions here in FL :D

If it fits the mp3 and the 2.0 ES then I'm
in. It's too hard to find a pipe bender and I can't find a better alternative to getting rid of the pre-cat.

hixtrix,

I was under the impression that AWR is CURRENTLY selling two different headers for the protege. Are you saying that these headers have not been made yet? The website www.awrracing.com says that they have a mild steel and another version.

Also, could you find out if it has provisions for and EGR tube and 1 or 2 O2 sensors?

thanks!

Check our previous discussion out as well for a little more info- http://www.protegemp3.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=4&t=000216
Apparently the header that is currently listed is not intended for street use. Their goal is to provide us with a header that provides good gains, and will also allow you to pass emissions testing. So keep posting your interest and concerns here, and then I will forward him the link once we have enough input to show substantial interest. Try to stay on the topic as both he and Mazda R&D will be reviewing our feedback. I would love to get this rolling and have this part produced as soon as possible! Thanks to those who have already posted, I will keep an eye out on this post in the meantime, and continue to post any additional info.

thanks for the info hixtrix. I may get the mild steel one they list on their site unless this "street legal" header is produced very soon.

could you email me AWR's phone number so I can inquire about the header? my email is:
eeterp@hotmail.com

I'd be interested in the header, but only if it removes the primary cat. I dont see a need to get a less restrictive header design, only to still be held back by the primary cat.
I see someone with a post saying they have a bosal header. ANyone know if how well it fit??
