The 2007 Ford Fusion brings affordable all-wheel drive to the midsize sedan segment.

All-wheel drive (AWD) is gaining traction in North America. Ford expects sales of AWD vehicles to exceed 500,000 annually by 2007 , with 400,000 of those being car or crossover vehicles.

Ford established a solid footing in AWD vehicles with the launch of the Ford Five Hundred, the Ford Freestyle and the Mercury Montego in 2004. Earlier this year, the company announced that the 2007 Fusion, along with the Mercury Milan and the Lincoln MKZ, will offer AWD as an option this fall.

Its definitely going to broaden the appeal, says Daniel Geist, Fusion Marketing manager. Customers are looking for AWD technology, and its something that nobody else offers in the midsize sedan segment. It will be a tremendous value and should spike demand.

Geist says about 40 percent of Fusions sales are conquest, several percentage points above what Ford initially expected. He anticipates the AWD option pushing that even further north, near 50 percent. The Fusions two biggest competitors, the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord dont offer an AWD option.

People will consider a Fusion with all-wheel-drive that probably wouldnt have considered it before, says Geist. While they may not need the space offered by an SUV, theyre still looking for the confidence that all-wheel drive delivers.

Unlike the four-wheel-drive systems found on many trucks and SUVs, Fusions all-wheel-drive system has been tuned with an emphasis toward performance while still offering confident, all-weather driving. By constantly monitoring and predicting traction, the system seamlessly delivers torque to all four wheels, even before wheel slippage occurs. An active, on-demand coupler can deliver the precise amount of torque to the rear wheels up to 100 percent.

The AWD Fusion will be in Ford showrooms in mid-October. While pricing hasnt been announced, Geist says the option will be similar to the Five Hundreds, below $2,000.

Where the Mazda6 with AWD?
AWD doesn't fit in the Mazda 6 v6 package. (that's why the MS6 used a 4) The front ends of the Fords are different enough that everything fits.

wow it can transfer 100 percent to the rear? the mazdaspeed 6 should have come with that rather than the 100/0 - 50/50

With the upcoming 3.5 Duratec it should scoot! Also, since Ford has admitted to many different sources that the 3.5 is already set up with F/I in mind, could we be seeing the beginnings of the promised SVT Fusion?

If so, I want one

We could see the AWD package fit into the next version of the Mazda6, when that comes out in a few years.

Good point. The next 6 will get the Fusion's wheelbase and width.

Hasn't Subaru been doing the midsized market for years? Don't they all have AWD? Maybe not the same type of system, but it is still AWD.

Even that name sounds pretty good, the Fusion SVT.

True, Subaru has been making AWD vehicles for years, but other than the Legacy and the WRX, which other vehicles have actually been decent looking?

Good point. I'd definitely think the Legacy would be considered a midsize sedan.
