Who here AutoX's I want to get started in that but I don't know how. Is there anyone here willing to give me a crash course and maybe set me up with someone so I don't have to go to my first event alone.
Well, if you are interested, find your local SCCA regions website and start emailing the SOLO chairman or the regions chairman. They are usually more than happy to assist you with any questions.
I went to pretty much every event I have competed in alone. Showed up not knowing anyone, and made a lot of good friends. Just show up, let it be known you are a novice and everyone will be more than happy to help you out.
And if you are looking for some R tires, let me know. I have a set of rims and tires, 17x7 ASA JS1s, pretty much the standard for the MP3/MSP to autocross on. Only $400 with about 1/3 tread life left. You'll have a blast on R tires.
I've been at this for 2 years and there is nothing better. I'm now running my Miata. Can't drive RWD worth a crap, but it's still fun.
This year was my first year, and it was a lot of fun, I improved a lot too. It was cool to find out they didn't think I was a novice in the middle of an event (they started timing me with the rest of the class).
www.myautoevents.com is a great sight for our region. Saginaw Valley region is the best to start in, as your allowed to have passengers (you can learn a lot more that way). The season is over now, I'm going to be running in a winter series at Kart 2 Kart (yep go carts, but these are fast ones). I'm starting to practice every other Monday or so, as that's the cheaper night, and I don't have class then. It doesn't sound like much, but Kart 2 Kart will improve you a lot (whats great is you get every lap time you run on a printout). The winter series has a bunch of local racers in it, so you'll only move towards their level.
It'll help you a lot to go to the season opener, as it'll be a training day, and will get you the most seat time of the year. There's also road courses that have open track days, but you shouldn't try those until you've run a few auto-x's.
Auto-x is set up for beginners. Its a technical challenge against yourself. So its perfect for beginners, plus everybody is very willing to help give advice, etc,...
