Autoweek article: Us vs. Them

Fellas, I thought some of you might find this article interesting:

Not that I'm paraniod but it does come from a Ford-sponsored site. Even though it credits Autoweek, I would like to see the full article with all photos and captions on a neutral website. Notice the MP3's large discrepancy between the left and right passes through the skidpad--a much larger difference than with any other car. Strange handling nuance or an injured car? Cornering prowess in general seems curiously low. I would have liked to see a slalom or emergency lane-change test.

Overall they were complementry to our car but stroked the SVT Focus to orgasm at the end. The SVT vs. the upcoming MPS Protege should be a dog fight. Realisticly, it seems there's nothing else close.

Also, in the Road and Track article expousing our ride as one of the Eight Best handling Cars on the Planet, the test car is riding on P-Zeros. Is anyone we know riding P-Zeros? I'd like to know how they like them.

As an aside, I explored a new Civic Si last night. I really love the seats (especially the material, which I will speculate as being close to that of which the MPS Protege's Sparcos will be constructed) and the shifter, though awkward looking, seems to work like a charm. Beyond that, though, the rest seems rather boring. I've now seriously explored the all the competition in the last two weeks (Civic Si, Tiburon V6, GTi VR6 and 1.8t, SE-R V-spec, SVT Focus) and, though it's been a year of new entries since I bought mine and I could afford more, I still can't find a single good reason to switch. I'm still amazed by the value, exclusivity, and class of our cars.

Yea, but.... Its a ford focus.

Anyone can make a car go fast and turn fast, the trick is making one that will last the tests of time.

Just look at the 2001 focus, I read in Click and Clack that they have problems with the airbag going off, rear wheel bearing has major problems that may cause the wheel to fall off. Among other things.

So don't read too deap into the article, its not all about out of the box performance.

Oh, you're right. I am no fan of anything American-automotive right now (whatever "American" means these days). And, as you said, numbers mean very little (especially when you don't have ALL the numbers). I just get the itch every six months or so to make sure I've got the best thing I can afford and, after exhaustive research, I think my car will be safe for a while. In my book, the Ford has never had a serious shot. First, it's a Ford. But also it's got a goofy interior and the styling, though I can see how it would be attractive to some people, doesn't give me wood.

As for the Jettas (and VWs in general) their weak point has always been their transmissions. They just feel like crap. Even back to my father's '93 Corrado VR6 catching third and fifth gear always felt like making a long-distance phone call. They are built like vaults and have high content for the money, they're just a chore to drive. Our transmissions (as we all know) could take a few pointers from Honda (or even Cousin Miata) but, overall, the feel is well above average compared to the ropey 6-speeds in the V-spec and Tiburon.

I felt that my Honda was sloppier than the Protege in the tranny. Maybe that's just me.

As for the VW's and tranny's, I haven't seen any major prolem with the newer cars. I know the older cars had some problems, but not that many.

WHAT A JOKE.

JUNK, I was reading the article and was at first intrigued about the results but now I know they are BIASED. This is what made me losa all hope in this article.

The MP3 system also brings with it another . ludicrously oversized subwoofer.

Ha ha aha ha ayhaahahahahaahaah

that tells me some grandma or grandpa wrote this shiznit.

:bs:

I think they need to rename the sight to "Grandma and Grandpas Car reviews". That was really poor. If it didn't have a Ford badge on it, it was a piece of junk. I guess their opinions are ok to be expressed, but it's amazing how off someone can be and truly think they are right enough to put it out for the world to see.

Now that I actually read the article, I realize the frustration that you guys have been expressing.

It is very Bias, of course it is from a ford site.

But a few things, like comparing the Focus to a BMW M3... Yea right Ford, I don't think you are comparable with that class.

Plus they make the MP3 out to be "factory-customized" yet the focus comes with rims, headers, and the such.

Also, this quote the "Focus is an amazing handler. This is the Lotus of the group."

If that is true then why was the MP3 in Road and Track's GRIP issue along with cars twice its price and not the Focus.

I still know where the ford is in my book. Its a wannabe import with disasterous ford engineering.

No thanks, I'll keep my MP3.

My brother has a Focus, he is also on this site from time to time. His username is ZX3Ford and although his car is pretty quick (capable of high 14's quarter mile passes) I still don't like the design of the Focus. Too many oval's goin on, no rear disk brakes (on some), big steering wheel, flat seats and those are just a few of my complaints. My MP3 too me, just looks better, feels more adhered to the road and gets 10 times more looks when I go out cruising. Sad thing is that I've raced my brother and he'd pull away at the top of second gear :(, that's no fun. He drove my MP3 and really, really liked it he just gripped about the lack of power.

I also read the Road & Track article that had the P-Zero's on an MP3. My friend has P-Zero's on his Suby and they deliver awesome dry traction, but their tread wear is even worse than our factory Dunlops. I'll be buying my replacement tire fairly soon and I'm going with Yokahama AVS ES100's.

trobbins,

Point well made with the TSB links. Wasn't "Quality (is) Job One" a few years ago... That's pitiful.

You think the Focus is bad? Take a look at the two Chevy's that I own:

There is another way to look at this. Maybe Mazda is just too stingy to make recalls and TSB's, whereas Ford and Chevy isn't afraid to. There are a few widespread problems on our MP3's that I think Mazda should put a TSB out on. Like the sway bar clunking or the transmission problems for example. So maybe TSB's aren't exactly a bad thing.

I agree to a point. I mean, too many is an abvious sign of a crappy car. Then again, take a look at all the mazda protege's on that site. There's hardly any recalls at all for any model, and with my experience with Mazda so far, it's not because there's nothing wrong with them, it's because Mazda doesn't do anything about them.

And that my friend is the reason why my next car might be another Honda....oh, and the fact that Ford is making mazda engines might have a "small" thing to do with it too.

From what I know, most serious recalls are usually made when there is a serious threat or safety problem. Such as a sticky throttle body on the SVT Focus. All else aside, they still should have a service bulletin issued for the clunking swaybar on the MP3's. As for the transmissions, they are still too few and far between to issue a bulletin. Although it seems like it is a serious problem, there are about 35-40 people, if even that many, that claim they have a problem with their tranny. I'm not try to start a flame war, but lets be realistic here folks, the just isn't enough evidence for Mazda to admit that the MP3 transmission is faulty and for them to issue a recall. My tranny is fine still and even if it begins to have problems I have the warranty to fall back on, so I'm really not concerned.
