Autos Planning On Running Boost, PLEASE READ

How about a Lentech converter with a stock stall and the rebuild kit. Shifting should be the same then.

From speaking with Len and Chris - replacing the 3 sensitive components should make the car safe for "over 250whp" - i would take that as "up to 250whp" though.
Valve bodies, Torque Converter and clutch packs/friction plates

I'm gonna opt in to being their guinea pig for the valve bodies this spring - and then torque converter and clutch packs either in the fall or when it starts slipping (whichever comes first)

So just to play it safe, we should keep the boost under 8 PSI on stock internals, right? If we get a new torque converter perhaps some pistons/rods as well, an auto P5 or even Pro sedan should be alright, correct?

I don't want my tranny all frigged up after 6-8 months of having the HiBoost kit that I plan on getting in the future. Can the ZM-DE engine (on the 1.6 sedan) and tranny handle 7-8 PSI on stock or moderately upgraded internals?

3 Turbo

hey guys i'm glad i found this post....i have the 3i w/ shiftronic and i want to run a turbo. i'm not looking to go up to 250hp. maybe 200hp not tryin to be the biggest and baddest. just want some speed. if i run 5-6psi daily on the atx should my tranny be ok w/ stock internals? help please.....

From what I have read, here is what I have gathered....

1) 8 P.S.I would be the MAX that an auto tranny could/should handle
2) It would be very smart to upgrade the tranny with better valve bodies and a better torque converter
3) A tranny cooler would be a great idea too as well as using Red Line or Royal Purple ATX fluid
4) Drive normally until around 4th gear, then stomp on it!!!!

Am I missing anything? (Besides the ATX-->MTX conversion arguement)

About tranny coolers, where would do I begin looking for one? About how much do they cost?

jegs.com about 80$ for a good one. Get one rated 24,000GVW or above.

its really not that, but the programing is so soft that it burns the clutch, just like if in your manual tranny, you would easy the clutch out at max speed/power=you will burn the disc; everything else is ok. also good luck with a conversion, as they do involve a lot, including computer and harness.

i have an auto 1.6L and im running 9psi daily pretty much. tranny slips a little bit but it also slips wiht 6psi

finding a harness - hard.
findina an ecu - easy

Luckily... seems like i might have found a harness :)

i never said installing anything was easy.
Although with a properly photgraphed install, a very detailed how-to and some mechanical savvy.. i'm sure most people could set aside 4days and do it themselves
I'm putting 4 days aside and $1500 ($1000 for parts up front.. $500 for misc. parts from Mazda)

hmm

d thru most of this stuff but i gave up and decided to just post a question. have you guys found a place that makes performance auto trannys? i know that buying a manuel is cheaper and all that but i just want a auto with a better transmission. i was looking around lentrch but didnt see anything saying they would fit a pro5 so i sent a email asking them about it waitng for a response still

How about boosting a 2005 Mazda 3 for daily driving? It's going to be my wife's car and a car show once in a while. How much reliable HP with sock internals?

If I need speed my 04 STI is quick enough.

SOCK internals

hmmmm, wool, cotton or blend? (uhm)

seriously though, this is what I found:
http://www.levelten.com
and
http://www.lentechautomatics.com/
Lentech quoted me $438 for their overhaul kit
My notes are a little weird but I think they said it includes Bands, clutches, frictions, steels, Gaskets and all soft parts.
They said to expect a shop to take about 4 hours of labor.
They also had some sort of "powerpack" upgrade and an Aluminum stator.
Not sure about the specifics on that.

i'm glad i came upon this thread, but damn everytime i think i have sumthin planned out "SMACK IN MY FACE" new problem, i guess now i have sumthin else to add to my list b4 i go FI lolz

peace

Has anyone actually ran a atx with a turbo for longer then a few months?

Crazy D, any more info on what you've been researching? I think those prices that you mentioned are to bad to run a turbo on an auto reliably.

Gimpo2, has had it for about 2 years, but now he did his manual conversion.

he ran auto for 2 years? really nice, do you know what boost? and if he did any tranny upgrades prior to going manual?

by the way, thanx for such a quick reply

I hate to be a d1ck and argue w/ you here, but this just isn't true. If you were running a sub 10 second car, and you had 1000+hp and a CUSTOM built auto tranny, then yes, what you say is true. But if you think a STOCK P5 auto tranny is better than a STOCK P5 manual tranny, then you'd better do some research. For staters, compare your 1/4 mile times with people with the same power in a MT...you're probably about 1 second off of them.

Either way, it's good to see the research you put into rebuilding your tranny, and thanks for letting us all know.

I would have to agree, I ate up a Mustang 5.0LX in the 8th, he was running Auto.

The example for quicker autos is bad, because we are NOT talking about the same trassmition, we are talking about the Protege 5spd Vs the Sport Shifter. #1 It CANT handle the horsepower levels manuals can, #2 You put EXTENSIVE wear when doing newtal drops (My grandma could tell you that) #3 in the WHP range the auto can handle, there is no contest with the 5spd in reguards to 1/4 ET's.

IF the Tranny wasnt "Stock" and Built to race that would be a completly different story as Kooldino said "If you were running a sub 10 second car, and you had 1000+hp and a CUSTOM built auto tranny, then yes"

Yeah, "Stock" is a bad word, but its also the one in front of that auto tranny in post #1

Before my headers I ran a Bosted Shadow, putting down 200whp on a auto, and I smoked him.

Any 2 3rd Gen Proteges equaly powered 1 with a sport auto the other with a 5spd, the 5spd will win every time as long as the driver isnt a moron.
