Auto Shifter Sticking

I've search through some of the threads from the past, and I kinda but don't get some of these solutions. I own a 2002 Edition.
My shift has just become stubborn as hell to throw into Park, and I can't start the car in park I always have to put her in Neutral. I also am having to force the shifter into drive. Now I have taken the whole assembly a part and it is filthy under the covers. Soda and everything else have not been kind.
How can I fix this?

Side question:
I pulled the knob off and have found 2 blue wires what are they? Do they connect to that black button on my shift(this has never done anything for me)?

Sorry, posted this in the wrong section could someone move it to Protege5 please.
Figured out why my knob wasn't shifting, but I am still curious about my second question.

Hi, I have the exact same problem with my protege 5 where the car doesn't like to go into park most of the time, and then I have to start it in neutral. Could you please let me know what you did to fix this issue?

Well, it was a linkage issue, so i would check there first. If you are looking in the engine bay, right hand bottom of the front is where all that crap is. I had set up a bracket to support my intake and it came loose and got snagged down there.second i was reading to check where your shifter is for grime and build up under all those covers. Big rob with a plastic or rubber sleeve in there.
