Auto dim mirror with compass without Homelink. Operational question.

I have a 2010 CX-9 Touring with an auto dimming mirror w/compass installed. W/O Homelink. I was wondering if the green light that is on the mirror ever goes out? The instructions are unclear as to what the light is for other than telling me that "YES" the mirror has power. The power button only turns the compass indication On/Off. Is this proper operation?
