Audiolink MP3 Adapter Issue

After looking around at various solutions for playing MP3s in my CX, I decided on the AudioLink MP3 player from RPM. I ordered it last Monday and it arrived in four days. Not bad considering the shipping was free!

I got around to the installation on Saturday and after perusing all the MP3 player install threads on here, taking the console off to get to the head unit wasn't a big deal. I managed to bend the two B clips, but got them bent back when I reinstalled the console. I also removed the glove box, of course. After doing some figuring, I decided to run the cord down in the corner between the glove box and center console....I'll take some photos to explain what I mean. In any case, the install was a breeze and I plugged my mp3 player in for a quick test before buttoning everything back up. So far so good!

Now we start having a little difficulty. I threw some tunes on an SD card using the proper file format (CD01, CD02, etc), took the card out to the car and stuck it in the SD reader on the unit. Nothing. The error wasn't EX:88 or EX:99 as it states in the instructions, but EX:89. (BTW, I'm writing this from memory, but I think those error codes are correct.) I tried a different SD card from a different manufacturer, but had the same result. Through all of this, I figured out that if I plugged the SD card into the USB thumb drive SD card reader that came with the kit, and then plugged that into the USB slot on the Audiolink unit, it worked fine. So, I figured I had gotten a unit with a bad built in SD reader.

I emailed RPM this morning about the issue and got this response:

We can send you a replacement if you would like, but it's not likely to solve the problem.
The issue really has to do with the fact that the onboard card reader is more likely to be incompatible with various sd cards than the external sd card reader. That's why we included the external reader.
I was fairly surprised at the response, to be honest. I tried two different SD cards from two different manufacturers and neither worked. Why would you sell something that is likely NOT to do what it's advertised to do? At least put something in the description of the product that says this is a common problem. I emailed back asking for recommendations for an SD card that would work, so we'll see what happens.

Has anyone else run into this issue?

Thanks!
