With the recent debut of MacBook, it has brought to my attention of upgrading my old laptop to a new one. However, it seems like Apple only offer 15'' MacBook right now and nothing else. The question is, have any of you heard of rumors or perhaps Apple employee that Apple would release 17'' MacBook anytime soon? Soon as to around end of Feb or early March.

So, should I wait for 17?

Thanks

Well the MacBook pro isn't even actually out yet. Apple has said that the model they showed off at MacWorld was a pre-production model, which is why they haven't released any battery life figures. This also explains why they only showed the middle of the road 15" model at MacWorld.

I would expect them to at least announce the 12" and 17" (or whatever the sizes will be) before they start shipping the 15", or maybe they'll release them all at the same time who knows.

Yea, I understand that MacBook Pro is not even out yet. According to Apple website, it says it will ship in Feb. So, I'm debating whether to wait for 17'' or just pre-order 15''. Though, I honestly dont know how long it'll take before 17'' is announce. I was hoping someone that keep up with Mac News or even Apple employee can give me some insights.

I wouldn't even consider joking about buying a MAC right now.

only reason why they are still around is the ipod.

I mean but is it really like most professional digital photographers and graphic designers spend that much money? right?

the iPod has been a boon for Apple but they will march on for quite some time with the customer base that they have for their machines. you know the ones that actually buy the latest Photoshop and accompanying software packages :D lol

Horray for garageband.. not.

Pro-tools has no strong OS anymore since it works well with everyone. FL Studio pwns face on PC.

The big Mac users are predominantly graphic designers and animators. These days reluctant modelers using Maya are getting into the mix. Audio is audio, you can do it anywhere. The only reason a lot of musicians use macs are because they are, how do you say, computer illiterate. Shiney buttons and odd shaped cases snare their senses as they wildly click about giggling. I deal with hordes of musicians and producers daily that use both. It's easy to sort out. In my profession being able to tri-platform is an absolute necessity. Usually the people who start these arguements have absolutely no idea what they are talking about.

Okie. I'm not here to create a huge argument because it'll go on forever. Everyone has their own opinion on the computer types. A computer is a computer, as long as it serves what you need, then it's a good computer. I'm basically just looking a laptop replacement and opinion on whether or not I should wait base on people's reading on the news.

i don't see why they wouldn't release a 17 inch macbook pro. i must say, though, have you tried a 17 in. powerbook? they're friggin huge. either way 17 or 15, i'd wait until the next rev comes out, so they work out the kinks, kinda like the first model years on the cars.

Well, I am positive Apple will release the 17'' MacBook. It's just the matter of times. I want to get the computer before I graduate so I can take advantage of student discounts :P
Yea, I've used the 17'' powerbook and I agree with you that they're huge. Although, in a way this will replace my current desktop PC. Basically, PC will be my gaming computer and Mac will just be my daily usage, such as emails, web browsing, pictures sharing, etc... Nonetheless, that's another one of my dilemma. I personally want to have the flexibility of carry my computer around w/o any hesitations, which I have a feeling I will with a 17''. Though, having 17'' have the advantage of bigger screen.

There is no way Apple won't release a 12" and 17" Macbook to fill in the rest of the Pro product matrix on portables, but it probably won't be until March (as their Pro apps, Soundtrack, Logic, and Final Cut, are fully Intel native).

If you don't have any OS X PowerPC applications right now, then wait a month or two for new announcements. If you have software that you can't afford to upgrade to Universal Binaries (Intel/PowerPC - not all developers are offering "free" patches to the x86 update), then I wouldn't hesitate to buy the fastest Powerbook G4 you can afford right now.

The rumours I've heard indicate a 13.1" widescreen instead of a 12" replacement (not sure about the top end; any larger than 17" on a portable and it isn't portable anymore

you're kidding right????

I don't think anyone could possibly be ignorant enough to actually believe this. (poke)

Two things:

1) Who are "they"? Apple or "MAC"? "MAC" is not a company, it's a brand. I hate when people use that in context.

2) Who cares if Apple "is still around" due to the iPod or any other source of income. They're a company and as such, it will be about revenues and profits.

People have been "predicting" their demise for the last 20 years.

Apple is a strong company. They aren't interested in the MASS computer market like Dell. They fill in a hole in the market where people demand well designed, reliable machines that actually do a good job of helping people accomplish their goals. Majority of Mac users are into creative/graphic design, video editing, etc etc, because these machines can work with media very easily. try doing it on a PC and you will see the downfalls of slow rendering, improper color management, messed up fonts, etc etc. it's true that their focus of business is shifting slightly to entertainment, but the more money they make, the more money they can pour into R&D to make their Mac products more interesting and more powerful.

Again. I'm not here to create a huge arguments between Apple vs PC, because it would be a never ending argument. Like I said before..

A computer is a computer, as long as it serves what you need, IT'S A GOOD COMPUTER.

Now, I appreciated for the ones that sticked to my original thread and helping me decide. Nonetheless, I think I pretty much decided to stick wtih 15'' because I think 17'' is a little too big to carry around (not that I carry around alot, but when I do). Though, I think I'm going to wait for a bit maybe around March incase Steve Job (aka The Gold Digger) would announce something new. In addition, I would actually like to see MacBook Pro in person.

Any other opinions? Help me decide!
