Just thought that I would let everyone know...

...I wrecked the hell outta my 2002 Mazda Protege5 today. I was travelling through Richmond, to help out a friend, when I noticed that I was about to pass the street he was parked on. I attempted to turn into the narrow street very quickly, and the car did a pretty good job, until I hit a large bump and the brakes.

I have ALWAYS been told never to brake in a turn, especially with a FWD car. For some reason, that didn't register here, and when I hit the bump, the car went airborne momentarily and lost traction. My wheels remained turned hard right, however when the car re-touched the ground, it continued to move in a straight path. DAMMIT.

I impacted a curb at roughly 25 miles per hour, and immediately destroyed the wheel. It hit so hard that the wheel was shot out of alignment and into the fender, denting and bending it. The side skirt was ripped off, and the metal kickpanel somehow bent up behind the tire. The steering support column was impacted so hard that it was completely bent and cracked, and now it resembles a cinnamon twist. The shocks and coilovers are at an incredible angle, and a depressing one at that. The tire was blown, and the metal of the kickpanel now rides the tire just right so that when the car is moved, the metal peels the rubber from the tire kinda like skin off an orange.

Overall, I don't know what to say, save that I started crying and screaming like a 2-year old. To my friends, it didn't seem like much, but to me, it was a complete loss. So much needs to be fixed, I don't know what to say. I can say that I won't be driving her for awhile, and that the cop who showed up was a great guy. He called my Mazda roadside assistance people, and attempted to console me...he also didn't issue me a ticket, although I prolly deserved one. In one last note, I can't believe I was that stupid...I should have just pulled over, and everything would have been alright....

...I am a complete moron.(I hope the MP5 forgives me)

:'( :'( :'( :'(

don't be so hard on yourself. just be thankful no one was hurt! Hope you get her back into one piece soon

Hey, if it's any consolation, I did something similar yonger but lied to the cops for the insurance after. (hand) Worse part is, I got cought a couple of weeks after. In the end, loss the car, my licence, went to court...blah blah blah. Took 6 of my longest years to afford buying a new car. I have been ridding in old pieces of crap and paying fortunes in assurances for cars that were older then me....

On a more pleasant note, nobody got hurt right? Except maybe just u're ego was shaken a little bit. U'll grow better out of it.

Hope all goes well.

*sigh* every p5 owners nightmare.
at least nobody is hurt but im really sorry that your beauty was wrecked (bang)

damn thats too bad...

but yes, at least you are ok and no one else was injured.

at least im sure that in the future you'll u-turn instead of trying to do sharp turns. =D

Damn Chandler sorry about that man!
Hope your baby gets fixed soon and back on the road, F'Burg won't be the same without it.

Gah! that sux :'(

If you need anything let us know.

Thank you so much guys...Mazda drivers are the greatest. I'm kinda depressed right now, but hey, I'll get over it sooner or later. Thanks for your support, and all I can wish for is that I get my car back soon, it looks good, if not better than when i left it, and that I have it back for spring break. Right now, who knows? I just hope that my baby will forgive me...

It's amazing how much your love shows for a car when it's gone! At least you're alright and your car is fixable.

At least you're alright and your car is fixable.

You hit the nail on the head Blown. Nobody was hurt and the damage certainly could have been worse. The other upside is no ticket! You were lucky on that aspect too!

Oh, and your MP5 will forgive you... Just make sure to always keep her clean, sparkling, and happy!

Oh, yeah, thanks for reminding me that there was no ticket - one more and I would have lost my liscense for 6 months. I can't get over how cool the cop was though...it could have been so much worse. And yeah, everyone's ok, except for me, of course...I hurt my baby.

I just got back from the Auto Body shop, and when the guy towed it from Richmond to Fredericksburg, he did so by pulling...yes, PULLING...it behind a tow truck. He didn't even use a flat bed! As a result, my MAZDASPEED Exhaust is all scratched up. Ain't that a b****? I am so angry! The minute he saw her, he should have given her the same respect he would have given a Porsche or Ferrari...at least in my opinion. The guy was so careless with what he did...when he loaded her up, he was all business, and he almost dropped her off the tow rack twice! It was almost worse than the accident!

Sorry to hear that, accidents happen. im sure you learned you lesson, and others should learn from your mistakes. I hope you get back on the road soon.

thank you paulmp3, you are very right. I have learned alot from this, and my friends were there when I did it, so they learned too. The primary reason I posted this is to let everyone know that while our cars are amazing and handle great, any perfect car needs an equally perfect road. My car would have made the gap had it not jumped. I AM NOT BLAMING THE CAR, just saying that our cars are not the best out there...but I still love mine! It's my fault it happened, and I hoped that by posting this, others might learn from my screw-ups.

Glad you're okay. When I was in my twenties I'd have probably tried to make the turn, 20 years later (now) I'd have gone around the block. It costs too much for too long when you wreck your car on your own. I know, done it too many times!

hehe Blame Richmond!!

I fully know about the streets of which you speak. My girlfriend who goes to VCU there often wonders why I dont take turns the same as I do in F'Burg.

:)

well...i think that your p5 will forgive you, soon enough she'll be fixed up and back on the road...and look on the bright side...you got to experience something pretty close to wrc...:D

haha I love WRC...sundevilMP5 is kinda right...it would have been so much more fun had my car handled the turn as planned, but hey, everyone makes mistakes.

my condolences for you and your loved one .. when in doubt .. grab the e-brake and cut the wheel .. powerslide in to it ..lol
