At 34k Miles now. What to do?

My 2007 Mazda5 is almost at 34k miles now and I need to take it in for servicing (my check engine light came on yesterday). I have changed the oil every 5k miles and rotated the tires regularly. Besides this, i have never had any other service work done on my car. Just looking for some guidance as to what I should get serviced at this point without overspending. Thanks guys.

Did you contact your dealer to ask what you should do ? Also check in your Owner manual, it describe what service should be done. Don't need to do everything but go with your judgement !

You have two issues: (1) the service light came on for some reason; and (2) you haven't done any maintenance.

Take it to the dealer to see why the service light came on, hopefully they'll repair it under warranty. In the meantime, read the owner's manual says and do what it says to do. You can listen to the dealer, but keep in mind that dealers will often say that more needs to be done (to get more $$$). What do you "need" to do? Everything that the owner's manual's maintenance schedule says to do. You can save money by taking it to an independent mechanic, the dealer will be your most expensive option and shouldn't be your first choice for routine maintenance like a radiator flush, etc.

And start doing regular maintenance on your Mazda5.

When you guys say regular maintenance, what do you mean? Besides regular oil changes, tire rotations, checking tire pressure, what else is there to do? Whenever I get my oil changed, i get the 'full circle' service inspection from the dealership so i've been keeping my car 'up to date' in regards to making sure everything is ok. My last oil change/inspection was in February so it's been about 4 months.

other than an air filter it seems to me like you're keeping up with service just fine. go pick up a new air filter. also probably want to do the cabin filter if the 5 has one. as others have said you'll want to check your manual but on most cars the first big maintenance items aren't until 60k if all goes well. most of the other items are listed as basically "change oil and inspect wear parts." wear items often need replacing before 60k like brakes and tires but that depends largely on how you drive so all you'll want to do is keep an eye on them and replace when needed. it's a good idea to take a quick look at your manual to see what is supposed to be done but i wouldn't expect much other than oil until at least 60k.

since it's presumably still under warranty have them pull the code and fix it. shouldn't cost you anything unless it's related to the air filter not being changed since i think the manual says to do that every 15k.

... Besides regular oil changes, tire rotations, checking tire pressure, what else is there to do?...
Read the owner's manual, it will tell you specifically what needs to be done, and when, under the maintenance section.

I don't have my owner's manual in front of me but things that may need to be done at 30,000 miles are a radiator flush, maybe a transmission & brake line flush, and air filter. But this is just a guess, read the manual.

the only real thing that you need to do before 30k is oil, rotate tires and cabin air filter. at 37,500 they mark the air filter. then more oil and rotating. cabin filter every 25k, engine air filter every 37,500. spark plugs at 75k. coolant at 105k. it doesn't ever list tranny fluid but if your manual doesn't say you should be good til at least 60k. brake lines pretty much never need to be flushed in a non-performance car. it's hydraulic fluid in a closed system. unless there is a leak it should stay good for a long time.

Thanks guys...and i know about reading the manual. The manual says change the oil every 7,500 miles but I've read from various ppl (here and other sites) that they change their oil every 3k or 5k miles so i change my oil every 5k miles. i thought i'd ask what people that owned 5's were doing for their cars. If i went with my judgment i'd probably never change the cabin filter b/c i don't know where it is and how it ultimately affects my car which is why i asked. As for the air filter, i installed a K&N filter at around 20k miles so i think i'm covered there.

has anybody else had their check engine light turn on after normal wear & tear? if so, what was the problem?

the cabin filter won't effect your car's performance in any way. it's for the air your breathe inside of the cabin. if it's gross air won't flow as well through your heat/ac.

i have a 3 but i have the same engine. i haven't thrown a CEL yet but feel like i may soon. i've been getting a hesitation/stuttering under cold heavy load acceleration, i.e. up a hill in a higher gear than i prob should be in when the engine is cold. if you stop by autozone they'll pull the code for you for free. alternatively you can spend $50 and have a code reader of your own that can also clear codes. comes in handy to have around and i find myself loaning it to others pretty frequently

sometimes the CEL will light just because you didn't seat the gas cap properly.

Since my last post, the check engine light mysteriously turned off. I'm planning to take my car in this weekend for an oil change (car's at 34k miles now). I was just wondering which service coupon I should use.

I have a $28.50 coupon which will get me:
-Change motor oil per specs
-Install a genuine Mazda oil filter
-Top off vital fluids
-Complete a multi-point/Full Circle Service Inspection

I have another coupon for $69.99 that will get me:
-Replace engine oil and genuine Mazda oil filter
-Rotate and inspect tires, check brake wear
-Check cooling system for leaks
-Test AC system for proper cooling and operation
-Check and top off all fluid levels
-Check belts and hoses
-Check and adjust tire pressure
-Check exhaust system
-Lubricate chassis and door hinges
-Check CV boots

Big question is should I spend the extra $40 or just go for the $28.50 oil change?

did you do a 30k mile service?(usa) I'd probably recommend the oil/filter change, air filter and cabin filter change at least...the spark plugs on the 5 are iridium so they go for 75k, and you might get away with doing the transmission and radiator flush at 45K...but why wait....preventative maintanence is the best maintenance....keep her lubed!

i'd go with just the oil change and rotate my own tires. the tire rotation is really what you're paying extra for. the only justification for the extra inspections is that your warranty is going to be up soon and if they notice anything they'll be able to fix it for you while still in warranty. but they're not doing anything that requires any extra tools so you could perform all of those inspections yourself.

Personally, I would get the oil change. Then as the service writer was writing up the oil change, I would ask how much it was to change the cabin filter. If the price was around $80 P&L for oil change and cabin filter, I would tell the service writer to include rotating the tires as well, and they'd have a deal.

Let them know that the check engine light came on, but now it has gone off. They can pull the DTC, and reset to see if same DTC reoccurs in the future. In addition, sometimes it is worth mentioning to the service advisor that you are going to be off warranty soon, because if the shop is hungry for work, a few $ in warranty claims from Mazda is better than 0$ cash from customers.

Thanks guys. I purchased new tires back in February so i guess i should get them rotated. Aside from the check engine light coming on and going out, the only problem I found is my wiper fluid light doesn't come on when i run out of wiper fluid. i guess this is something the service guy can check.

We have a Washer Fluid Low Light?

I just looked in the service manual, and it does show a washer fluid level sensor in the washer bottle. However, I can't recall that I have ever seen my warning indicator light up on the instrument cluster. Hmmmmmmm.......

LOL...i guess i'm not the only one having problems with the washed fluid indicator.

I'm here at the Mazda dealership getting my car serviced. The service guy just told me there is no washer fluid sensor/indicator on the Mazda5 which explains why i've never seen it light up.
