Waiting is the hardest part. 300 miles down, 300 to go before I can stop being so gentle and open, pshhh, it pshhh, up! At least that's what the manual said; 600 mile break in.

I waited till mine was at around 500 miles, and even then I still didn't really gun in until I had the first oil change at 1.5k

And here comes the "break in" argument....lol

I love the part about, "its what the manual said". Most often tell you not to do anything to raise the boost and we know how everyone follows that suggestion.

And don't forget that it came with special break-in oil so you better not deviate from what the manual says. You wouldn't want that magical assembly lube to go to waste.

Drive it like you want it to perform on a daily basis.

i think i broke mine in for about 100 miles, and then went wot and redline on every shift until 21000 which i just hit a few days ago.

maybe this is why my car doesn't backfire, doesn't smoke, doesn't have problems with my valve, no fluttering , no compression surging...my ecu is smarter than yours

I think this is more about personal comfort level.

I also waited a bit before I pushed my 3speed. But you'll have many people tell you break-in is no longer required or that you need to beat the hell out of it out of the gate to really break the engine in right. Personally I do it out of personal comfort and knowing that I want to keep my warranty if anything breaks. Sure it maybe playing it overly safe but it's your choice of what you feel comfortable with. They're are a lot of myths that people choose to follow becasue it's what they know. Some myths drive behavior that is dangerous and ignorant and some myths are harmless actions that speak to a persons own comfort zone. I think the whole break-in argument is one of the harmless ones. Look at it this way. Playing it safe for the first few hundred miles may not only break in the car but it will also break in you with the car; allowing you to learn about the cars dynamics and how it drives.

Also look at it this way: manufacturers wouldn't put it in the manual if there wasn't some truth behind it. Anyway Mazda doesn't really require a break-in, rather they "recommend".

I spoke with the dealer when I bought the car. He said no break-in period was necessary. I also read the manual cover-to-cover the night I got it. It said no break-in was necessary but I should drive the car at varied speeds for the first 500 or so miles. My daily commute is 10-30MPH traffic followed by a few minutes of 65-70MPH interstate. I consider that "varied".

My salesman also said that there was no break-in period -- the engine and transmission were already broken in. I understand that break in period for an engine was something started long ago before manufacturers could consistantly build engine to the tolerances they can today. i figured that since the manual recommended it, i would try to adhere to it...at least as best i can. that's not to say that i haven't had redline shifts or hard acceleration now and again...just not as often as i'd like.

I was easy for the first 125 miles...the first night...then found a road and did a good pull but only revving to 5500 rpm...then I was pretty easy to about 300 miles...still boosting here and there but keeping it to 5000rpm or below...half throttle inputs

I hit 800 miles last night and took one of my old professors for a ride...with him holding the iphone with dynolicious installed...I figured it was about time for a thrashing...

Didn't launch as I rarely ever do that that but gave it full whack all the way through third...then took him up to about 115mph on the freeway...and then through some nice turns...

Apparrently we hit 1.1g lateral..which I find hard to believe but we did go though a pretty gnarly cloverleaf. .89g braking...entirely possible...there was some ABS and .4g acceleration...which is pretty impressive as F1 cars rarely go that much above 1g of acceleration...

Oh yeah...then on the way home we have an excellent new corner from 290 to 610S to I-10...got the stability control light flashing and telling me I was being naughty at ohhh about 95mph out the chute....which i thought was pretty damn cool :)...intervened pretty early in my opionion...

yeah i pretty much adore my new car...

+1000! It's up to each person, but I'd rather play it safe. I could go on and on about this but I think I'd just add more fuel to a (pointless) fire.

In my case, I also found the wait hard to bear, but it's one of those times it sort of adds to the experience. It's kinda like seeing a woman strip I guess... lol

F430tech... that's an epic signature... the JPS Lotus livery is badass.

Despite what may be true about break in periods, I can almost ensure you that if it happens to blow up during the first 600 miles, and they pull the computer and see it 6500rpm, they will not honor the warranty because you didn't follow the manual's instructed break in period.

Can you point me to where the manual says not to exceed 6500 rpms in the first 600 miles? I read it cover to cover and didn't see anything like that.

Thanks...I have some pictures of it somewhere that I took last year when it still had the bodywork on...I just about cried the first time I saw it. Whoever owns it is currently doing a full rebuild. They strapped it to a dyno before they stripped it and it made 1400hp....i'll just let that sink in...

The Tub is crazy its around the time they really started to make use of carbon fiber...it looks SO RAW...and it so solid...todays stuff is almost flimsy in comparision. But this is before they really knew what carbon was all about...

I love that they had to advertise even when the car was in pieces and being worked on...damn tabacco companies....(former smoker)
