I just blew my engine. Massive detonation bent my rod and sent my wrist pin c-clip flying off and left a huge gash on my cylinder walls. Sent it to a shop and they say they have 2 choices:
1. new short block
2. iron sleeves

I'm going for the iron sleeves but was wondering if any of you guys have them on your cars. Anyone?

BUMP

Anyone have any experience with sleeving blocks? Or how much power are you guys pushing out without sleeving?

Know it isn't a CAR but that is about all we did with HP motorcycle engines when cylinder was damaged, If machinist has the experience and skill to do so should be fine, might check with Ken at PG and see if they have experience with sleeving one of these blocks.

Cylinder sleeves are very common for aluminum and cast iron for repair or over-sizing purposes. Any competent machinist with the proper tools can sleeve a single cylinder or an entire block if there is enough meat beneath (main journal area) and between cylinders to hold them in.

Sleeves don't transfer heat as well as plated aluminium. And the piston clearances you'll need will be different as well.

I've had damaged motorcycle cylinders welded up, machined and replated. US Chrome is one outfit that can do it. You might check with them. It may hinge on the availability of oversize pistons- they machine out the remaining plating before replating so the new pistons need to be oversize.
