Anyone raced a MR2 turbo?

My mum has an 89 supercharged. Even that stock for stock would be a close race. the older models were a lot lighter, and 165hp stock revving to 7500+ (no idea on torque) it's a quick as hell car. Can't drive one after the other because it's in Vancouver and I'm not ... but from memory it would be very close.

Edit: that's in a straight line. We'd kill it in the twisties.

I think both cars can handle pretty good, i think it's all on the driver when it comes to the twisties, especially the mr2 being rwd and midengine, you'll have to learn how the car reacts before you go hitting turns and stuff. imo

Wish I never got rid of mine. That was was much quicker in the twisties then my MSP ever could be (understeer kills this car). As far as quater mile stuff goes, I'm not sure. Neither the MR2 nor the MSP are made for this, so I think that both of them would be very slow.

MR2's mid 14s stock
MSP's low 15s stock

The MR2 Supercharged was rated at 145HP, not 165...unless Canadian horsepower is like the currency ;)

MSPs are very neutral in handling while the MR2 has a lot of oversteer because of the weight distribution. but MR2 turbos are very quick if they do not weigh too much.
MR2s have a tendency to spin irrecoverably once you lose the rear end, but that is not the same as oversteer. An MR2 that is set up for stock class autocross can be very neutral.

I haven't driven a Mazdaspeed Protege, but other people's comments on this forum to not make the handling sound neutral.

MR2's are awesome. I have one with a TD06 turbo, and it is a joy to drive. I used to have an NA before the turbo. The NA's can be competitive at an auto-x but I've not tried my turbo yet. I doubt it would do well with a larger turbo, no lsd, and shot syncros; not to mention being in a hard class. You must respect and understand the midengine RWD design, before you push the car. They will snap oversteer. Its a tough car to push to the limits, but its very rewarding to a good driver.

I was considering driving my P5, at an autocross until I get a new tranny for my two. What class would I be in, and what would I be up against.

I could smoke my MSP with my Mr2 down any twisty road, any day of the week and in any type of weather. The MR2 is such a quicker car in the twisties and such a better car to drive (either fast or slow). The MSP has the worst, and I mean the worst understeer that I have ever encountered! It is so unreal and so bad that it slowed me down three to five seconds per lap atThe Steets of Willow (Springs). Plus, it is not fun when your whole car starts to shake like it is going to fall apart (the MSP has really bad cowl shake).

The MR2 is the far better of the two cars here, regardless if it is a N/A or Turbo or Supercharger. The only thing that the MSP has going for it is four doors.

I second that.

What makes you (the original poster) think that a MSP will kill a MR2 on the twisties?

Uhhhhhh ... the MSP doesn't have bad understeer... really. Perhaps you're just used to the MR2... How can you know how much it slowed you down anyway? Cowl shake? Yeahhhhh.... Don't get me wrong -- I think the MR2 is great. It just seems like you're used to driving supercars or something. (poke)

Anyways, isn't this in the wrong section?

I've never driven a MSP but my P5 defininatly understeers. It bothers me so bad. Its not extreme, but very noticeable.

I got owned by one about a week ago. I saw it, and took off. It tried to catch up, but couldn't. We came to a stoplight, and at greeen, we each cruised out, and then I hit it. My damn lag was horrendous, and the Mr. two was gone. I pull up and give the thumbs up, and get on to where I was going. This weekend I just discovered that I had an exhaust leak that has been costing me spool time and low-end power. I fixed it yesterday. :D The power is back! (yippie)

What mods does your friends MR2 have? How much boost?

OT: Jflo, how did you do your sig like that. The outline part. Is it a filter?

Stock 3rd gen 3S-GTE, HKS SS BOV, boost controller set at 18 psi and just exhaust. Basically it's stock.

That's not my timeslip, it's my friend's. He ran a 13.3 with his stock MR2.

there was a black MR2 at the track when i went last weekend. he purposely delayed his launch to stay under a 10 sec 1/4, cause that requires a rollcage. the guy delayed for about 2 seconds and then launched. he still ran really low 11's. the s*** was ******* insanely fast. no clue what he had done to it.... but holy s*** did it haul some ass.

The fastest MR2 in North America is in the 10's maybe 9's.

The car you seen has been a hot topic on the MR2 board. Here is a quote by Alza. Here is the link: http://www.mr2oc.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6481

Chemvolts 756rwhp dyno video
Dave decided to go to the dyno again today since we were having problems with the fuel system the other day at the track. We replaced the pump and filter and headed out to the dyno before he goes out tonight to run at a sport compact night in Phoenix.

With the nitrous (100 direct port) and 2bar (30psi) of boost the car put down 756rwhp/529tq. Dave is heading out to the track as we speak and hopes to do much better than yesterday at the track, which results can be seen in the racers forum under drag racing.

i think the slip and vid links are broken now. But he ran 11.01 and then later in the week ran a 10.74 @ 132.

Too bad Wraith blew his motor at the tracks. :/

And I think it was 10.72 @ 142mph.
