Anyone notice this forum running slow?

Enry... one thing I found that helped was disabling forum viewing priviledges for non-members. For example... there are 85 members online right now and 66 more guests.

At least if one is going to take advantage of the resources of these forums, they take the 2 minutes to register.

it seems to be faster now.. did you make the change already? does that require a reload of mysql? i didn't notice any downtime..

Here's some info. If someone has REAL, PROVEN instructions on how to optimize for speed, I am open to suggestions.
Otherwise, spare me the short-sighted comments or half-assed remarks or I will get VERY upset.

The database is over 3 gigs. We have a 2.4 with a gig of ram. CPU load right now is 0.26, 0.59, 0.57.
Apache settings are:

Thanks...

Hey Enry, are you guys using Apace Ver. 1.3 or a newer version??

The majority of our problems with Apache occur in the declaration of the connection strings, not the actual DB code, at least for our in house stuff.

I have some stuff I can that we use for our database connections, but the majority of it is for DB2. Let me ask one of our internet developers and I'll let you know what I find out.

smtp flood?

theres another problem, I dont know if this is happening to other members, but:

When a member submits a post in a thread that Im suscribed on, usually, the site sends one email about it (I configured it that way). The problem is that...Now it send aprox 9 emails of 1 same post of a member.

So, sometimes when I check my email, there are 28+ emails for only 1 post on 3 threads for example.

A GOOD IDEA:

visit www.howardforums.com

hes got 40,000 members. ask him how its done!!!

If you think that's impressive check out vwvortex.com! They've got over 70,000 members and the average amount of active users during peak is 500. It all has to do with the bells and whistles built into the forum I guess. Believe it or not, they're server is only running on a 333mhz computer yet their forum is pretty darn fast. Now, that's skills if you ask me.

I think it has everything to do with the forum searches IMO. Sometimes I'll get an ultra fast connection, then it will slow down to a crawl...and jump back up again. Is there built in caching of mysql queries?

(for example getting the latest threads can be cached and updated once every 10 seconds or so...) These other forums that are suposedly faster...what forum software and platform do they use?

I am upgrading to a VASTLY newer VBulletin. I was told it may solve the problem.

Its gotta be the software...cause a P4 2.5 or whatever you've got should be able to handle the traffic no sweat, and it obviously not a bandwidth issue (which is usually the case with high-traffic forums where people post lots of pictures)

What OS are you running?

I hate BSD...

...and I hate the fact that Apple decided to use it for their OS. It just make my job that much more tedious.

Anyway, I was just making sure you weren't using Windows (choke, choke). Any version of Unix will run much smoother.

I've played with many open source unix implementations, since longer than I can remember, and freebsd is what I've settled with. I have my reasons, both scientific and personal. Right now I am just quite happy our host provides freebsd and not the usual linux distro.
