Two reasons:
1) You feel the need to impress strangers.
2) You need it to fill your life with stories and images you couldn't possibly think of yourself.

1.) Mine spends 90% of its life in my briefcase. I commute on a train for ~2 hours every day -- it's good for MP3's. I don't need an ipod because i have no need for that much music to be carried with me.
2.) It's just kinda cool. It's another gadget to play with, and at the rate it's going, it will be able to do some pretty amazing s*** by the end of next year.
I thought they were fairly homo until i bought one. it does what i need it to do, and it's something neat to play with when i travel.
reasons I'd like one-
you should also be able to get wi-fi on it, its a lot lighter than carrying around an entire laptop to watch movies, entertaining myself when yelling "entertain me, b****!" doesn't seem to have the same power it used to... etc.
