A friend of mine that owns an Aftermarket and racing company has been throwing around ideas with me about parts he will produce for our cars..

one part that may come out soon is an Under Drive Pulley. His pulleys surpass any company that makes udp's.

i need an idea of how many people would be interested in this part..

it will weigh 1.5 pounds or lighter.. his same udp for a neon is 1.1 lbs.

they are CNC machined from 6061-T6 billet Aluminum. which is very light. I dont know the exact tolerance he has for the other UDP's but the tolerances for balancing and measurements but it is better than Unorthodox's .001.

Everyone let me know if your interested. The more people the sooner it will be out.

Pricing will be around Unorthodox's price . possibly a lot cheaper.

I would caution against removing the harmonic balancer that is part of the crank pulley. It's there for a reason, and a turbo Miata without the balancer will destroy its oil pump in about 2000 miles. A turbo Miata with a stock crank pulley will run for over 100,000 miles...

Concentrate on making larger pulleys for the accessories instead.

hey

I'll take one if it's well prices and good enough. my thoughts on udp's are simple. yes i beleive they can screw your engine.....but if you are rebuilding your engine and it is perfectly balanced internally, there is basically no need for a harmonic balancer.

stock you're fine with udp's, or if you mod, a full engine rebuild and balance is required.

for the 4hp, I'll NOT get the UDP. Like FM said, work on accessory pullies if anything.

A common misconception. The problem is not a lack of balance in the rotating masses. It's that the pistons exert unbalanced forces on the crankshaft. The more power you make, the more effect these forces have - and the more critical the harmonic balancer is.

Don't take my word for it. See what Dinan has to say:

actually it is not 4 hp with his udp's .... his average gain with his is 8 hp to the wheels... many of his customers have built up 250 hp NA monsters that use his udp and have had no problems ... he can also make a race udp that weighs .5 lb .. its crazy to feel the difference in weight compared to some of the competitors pulleys.

We will be having a wake this weekend to mourn the deaths of the motors for the folks who remove their harmonic balancers when they put their aftermarket pulleys in. Please RSVP and say what dish you will be bringing so we can avoid repeats.
Thanks,
Brook

Such pulleys on a stock 130hp 4-cyl might let the motor last for a while. Put it on a F/I or all-motor tuned car and you might as well break out the 40oz to pour on the sidewalk.
I watched a Miata die a slow death when a friend of mine put a pulley on. Kept trying to figure out why his idle was getting rough, remapping his CPU, etc.
I did not know at the time about the harmonic balancer.

well i talked to him a cuple min. ago and instead of a udp .. how about lighter accessory pulleys.. they wont remove the harmonic balancer. he dosent know how much they will gain but we will do dyno's on my car if he produces them.

we are talking over many things to produce.. many things are up in the air.. we just need to know what the demand is for and it is clear that a udp is out of the question...

one part i know for sure is a strut tower bar.. it looks bad ass...
i will post some pics of what it will look like after i go to his house on friday and help tune his stand alone on his car... he just got his car running and it is insane.... he has anti lag on it too!!
he is running 32psi on 8.5:1 compression on a sohc 96 neon .. and its daily driven.. his goal is to have over 500hp to the wheels.

Lighter and larger accessory pulleys are the way to go. You'll get some underdrive, less mass and avoid the potential problems.
