Anyone experienced mazda cx 5 smart city brake ?

New CX-5 GT owner with tech package. Just curious whether any one has experience the automatic( i.e not turned off manually) smart city brake feature ?

Curious - I tried creeping vehicles multiple times at low speed just to check whether the feature kicks in . It never did!

I tested it in a Mazda3 2014 at a mazda promotional event a week ago. The test consisted of a small incline with a balloon type object that would mimick a parked vehicle. The instructor was very clear in his instructions : SCBS will only work if the driver is not in control of the car (no brake, gaz or steering input) and between speeds of 4-20 mph.

So for the test, we would brake 10m in front of the object to a full stop, then let the car go towards the object. We'd hit about 20-25 kph (canada). at 6m, the car detects the object and "readies" itself for the SCBS application, and at 3m it applies brakes, so we would be a little less than a meter from the object when the car is at full stop. the first time it was pretty stressfull because you seem so close, but it is designed to work at low speeds so...

A friend of mine tried it on the 6, and said basically the same thing. Hope this helps!

I've had mine start to kick in a couple of times approaching a stop sign with a car ahead that's starting to pull into the intersection and I'm trying to glide to the line for a stop; first time startled me. It's similar to anti-lock brake engagement.

2. Find a parking lot to place big cardboard box.
3. Try ramming into it.
4. Watch SCBS work it's magic. (lol2)

Had a similar situation. Mine's also gone off a few times pulling slightly quickly into a parking space with a big bush at the end of it!

What did you try, exactly?

Mine has activated with my foot pressing the gas. The only time I've ever gotten it to go off was leaving a gated community. The gate goes up fairly fast, so in past cars I've owned I've always given the car more gas when I see the gate opening up. For some reason the SCBS seems to think I'm going to crash and applies full brakes and brings the car to a stop. After 3 times of it doing this I just wait for the gate to open more before trying to go through it. I can try to record it next time I go through that particular gate.

I've triggered mine on my garage door 3 or 4 times. Basically the door is heading up, and I'm gauging pulling into my garage - the door is above my hood but not the window, so the laser hits the door and brakes are applied.

I have the GS (Touring in the US) model, so I don't have the sensor. Reading all of this, I'm kind of happy I don't. Keep in mind though that my cell phone is always off while in the car (I don't even use blutooth/voice command), and I have never been in even a minor accident. I think I can avoid the circumstances where it would be necessay on my own, and I would hate not to feel in complete control of what my car does.

Seeing all the stupid people who talk/text while driving, I'm kind of happy the system exists to protect my back end though...

Mine went off when going round a roundabout (UK) and someone tried to nip across my path in front of me. Definite heavy braking.

I had *tried* testing it with low speed "collisions" like you've done, but failed to set it off. Perhaps there's a minimum speed at which it fires? A speed that was too fast for my bravery when testing?

Anyway - it went off in a real-world scenario, even though I don't think there would have been a collision as the car nipping across my path did so at 90 degrees and quite quickly.

Must be something new... I also have the 2014 Touring (called the GS in Canada). No smart city brake. That feature only came with the GT when I bought mine in March. When was the feature introduced on the GS?

I tried the creeping thing too and thought it was turned off until I pulled front in to a parking spot with an overhanging branch. The brakes applied and scared the crap out of me, I thought I'd run over something!

I'm a fairly aggressive driver, and I drive ~100km a day with good portions of that in heavy traffic. I have never had it go off, which is sad because I want to see it in action.

Maybe I'll try the cardboard box one day...

I've TRIED to get mine to kick in and work but couldn't. Then within 2 weeks, it did it on its own.
When I'm pulling up into my house I would open the garage and drive up the driveway slowly while the garage door is still opening then go in.
I must have been going a bit too fast (foot off the gas, ready to brake) but the car thought I was going to crash into my garage door and SCBS kicked in and stopped the car.
Scared the heck out of me!

Second time was me pulling into a parking spot and in front of me was dirt/bushes and it kicked in.

My CX5 has the SCBS and I was taken by surprise yesterday when it activated - the car in front of me was turning into a parking lot so I applied the brakes then coasted forward as the car completed the turn. I suppose I got too close for the system to be happy, so SCBS activated and abrubtly brought my car to a halt, much to the dismay of the driver behind me. I suppose it is good technology, although I would not have collided with the car in the absence of the system so it was more of an annoyance this time. Happy to see it is an effective system though.

For those that have tried this I can't figure out how to make it work
The other night we tested with a big cardboard box and the CX-5 never stopped
The first test was at 5 MPH (my foot was off the gas and brake pedals

The second test was at ~9 MPH (again off the pedals)

Anyone have any thoughts?

I still have the box and can try again
