So I acquired a 89' Mazda 929 late this summer and everything was great. I found out later that the car started in any gear, P/R/D...etc. Well about a month or two ago the car would fail to start in P so I tried one of the other options and wallah....it would start.
Just recently "Drive", my choice gear for starting, started to get sketchy and I would have to jiggle the shifter until it would pop off.
Well now the car doesn't start in any of them. After much searching I discovered that these cars are over engineered and that the Inhibitor Switch (tells the car what gear it's in and is connected to shift linkage) has gone out.
For any of you experiencing this problem...get ready for a $200+ part and a half hour job.
