anyone cut springs on there pro5?

You guys need to stop talking s*** about subjects you have no experience with. Most of you are not old enough to remember that before there were lowering springs the only way to lower your car and make it handle better is to cut your OEM springs.

The old Toyota Grand Prix celebrity race in Long Beach CA raced in Celicas that had cut springs.

I cut the springs on my 77 Celica and replaced the OEM struts and shocks with Bilstein. It was neither dangerous nor did it make the ride bad. I also had Centerline special drill a set of rims to fit and before I got poped by the police I had a set of aircraft landing lights for highs. It was a 100 times brighter than any HIDs you can buy. I also had racing seats with a full roll cage. Unfortunately the new smog laws made it illegal and I had to sell it to a co-worker who lived in Mexico.

The only problem with cutting springs now is that the springs are made of better metal so they are much harder to cut. You would need a metal cutting disk or a plasma cutter.

As everyone else has said, don't do it. You can't cheap out on something like this, you will end up kickin yourself in the end, because you will end up spending more fixing things that will go wrong. Just to it the right way and buy some lowering springs.

i'm not sure about the safety of cutting springs, does sound like it would effect performance of the spring and the handling of the car, but why not just save up the $$$ and get some springs made to do the job? if you don't like the ride or the handlng, you're back to square one...getting new lowering springs anyway

Dude... I'm 46 and I've seen the problems it causes, let alone safety issues. And you will never get the car properly aligned...

What safety issues and problems have you actually seen and what alignment issue? Please, no I knew someone who knew someone stories. There are problems with any mod if it's not done properly. Perfect example is installing lower springs without upgrading struts.

I knew people who raced with cut springs and I personal cut my springs and I didn't have any problem with alignment.

How does a set of cut springs affect one's ability to align one's car different from that of a set of aftermarket springs if the OEM springs are cut identically? I was in the import tuner thing before there was such thing as a import tuner. There were just a few shop in LA that were doing it back then.

the problem with cutting springs is that you have the same springrate and less travel. Unless the suspension was designed for big hits from the factory (ours is NOT), you'll be riding the bumpstops.

What I've learned from working on and building cars:

do it right the first time.

You'll end up doing it the right way anyway after the easy/cheap way craps out on you.

my friend cut his stock springs once. about 1.5inch drop!! he was doing 80 down the freeway and his springs calapsed on him.... nuff said.

edit:my friend corrected me he cut off 1 1/2 coils not droped it 1. 1/2 inches

if you cut only 2 coils off you wont be riding on the bump stops...thats only if you cut it to short......i only took 2 coils off my ride is dropped just right...the ride isnt bumpy at all it feels just the same..nothings wrong with it been driving it for a while

My friend cut the springs too short...now the car is on the ground...Some other friends did that and their asses no longer stay on the chair unless they're waiting at a complete stop or are parked.

I Will Say It Again! Do It Right, And Get Some Springs!! You Can Find Some Good Used Ones On These Forums!!

Dude what is the difficulty here? If you can't afford a set of $65 lowering springs, you need to be selling your car so you can move out of your cardboard box of a house and buy some KD so you can eat and leave your baby momma and IROC on blocks in front of your cardboard box cause $65 is too much to spend on your car...

I cut springs on my 88 colt, ONLY because no one makes springs for them anymore. I only cut 1 full coil off the top section of spring.
It did nothing to the ride, and lowered it roughly 1".

I would love to get proper lowering springs with designed spring rates for the application.

I still dont understand why guys like to go so low. Yes it looks good, but is not one bit practical.

Im buying my p5 because ive done research to see what is available for this car, and there is lots. I wish my colt had any options available in catalogues like every other car out there.

JUST BUY PROPER LOWERING SPRINGS! they alone make a difference in ride, plus give you the looks too.
good luck with your decision.

soon to be p5 owner.
