Thanks all for the input. I think the cards are the way to go. While they are suseptable to environmental damage or theft/loss just as the HDD-based devices, I feel more confident knowing they are much more impact resistant, lighter wieght, do not require a power supply, and do not rely on firmware/SW to confirm transfer function accuracy. Some of the devices I've seen quote a DL time of ~60 seconds/GB and ~90 to verify the data is an exact copy. That's a long time for the head to be moving around. I'd want to make sure the device was sitting on a table away from impact to prevent a crash during that time, which may or may not be convenient.
Any, I'll keep my eye out for deals. BTW, I have a Nikon D50 which does not support the HDSD standard, so 2GB cards are the largest size I can safely use.
