Any photographers in here?

I just got some Elinchrom 400s, so I set one up and took a quick pic using my buddy Gary as a subject.

So I finally got my camera and most of my equipment. The rest is either on the way in the mail or still sitting on my wish list. I picked up a Nikon D300 and an SB-600 Speedlight. Got a few lenses, the 70-300 VR, 28mm 3.5, 20mm 3.5, 55mm 2.8 macro, 35-70mm 3.3, and 80-200 4. Got a light stand, couple umbrellas, remote trigger, and Lowepro Flipside 300 bag on the way. Messing around with the flash today, shot this one into the mirror in my bathroom, bouncing the flash off the wall to my right. Used a black sheet for a background.

Congratulations on the equipment. The D300 is a sweet camera. It will make you a lot of money if you treat it right. Regarding the flash and off-camera light aspirations, it can't be said enough: Read strobist.com. All of it.

Also, I know you are just getting up to speed on this new camera equipment, but you really can not ignore the stuff on the back end of your workflow that will improve the quality of your work. I'm talking good ingest and tagging SW; quality post processing SW (Photoshop anyone); and hardware monitor calibration. I use Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2.2 which integrates with a (separately purchased) copy of Photoshop CS3. I can use non-destructive editing throughout my entire workflow. Lightroom will convert NEF files into DNG but I haven't found that to be a problem.

Also, I don't know what equipment you have in the mail or on the wish list but you need to bring those lenses into the 21st century. I personally don't think the 70-300VR is a good fit for the D300. Its a consumer lens and won't produce images that would justify the purchase of a D300. Good practical advice on Nikon gear can be found at kenrockwell.com.

Good luck!

Good lenses for whatever you'll need on that D300 is the 17-55 2.8 and the 70-200 2.8

Great combo. And ^^ is right. Workflow and being organized is a big chunk of being successful.

A few weeks ago, everyone was taking shots of the full moon. I saw this on the way home from work around 4:30pm, and figured it would be a nice change of pace.

I know the trees really take away the effect of the sky in this one but I didn't have time to relocate, so I shot it as is.

This one is kinda dull, but I liked the way the snow layed untouched on the rooftop.
