Another one bites the dust

Add me to ever growing list of tranny problems:
I'm driving home last night trying to merge onto the freeway.
I'm in second accelerating moderately, then go to shift into 3rd. Release the clutch and press the gas, I hear the engine race. I'm thinking, WTF!!?? I depress the clutch again and try to put it into 3rd again. this time it catches. I'm wipe my brow and think that was a close call. I sighed too soon though. When I go to catch 4th, nothing doing. I try 1st and 2nd nothing I can't even get the shifter over to the gates. I try 5th same thing. I immediately thought about my brothers and sisters on this site that have had tranny problems. So i'm cursing Mazda at this point. Here I am in the middle of rush hour with a f'ed tranny. I can depress the clutch but can't get out of 3rd. Luckily for me I was about 5miles from the dealer and eventhough traffic was heavy, it was moving. So after several attempts to get the car in another gear, i was finally able to move the shifter to the 1-2 gate but still couldnt catch a gear. So I call the dealer, tell him about my dilema and inform him Im on my way. So I get there and the service advisor comes out and there to get the car outta gear too, but to no avail. So here takes the car and calls a rental for me. Right now I'm not complaining because cuz they are picking up the tab for the rental and no I didnt get another 4banger econo either. I got a Jeep Liberty Sport. I have a Rodeo but damn this thing is nice. It has a nice throaty growl under heavy acceleration. So the dealer gives me a call earlier this afternoon and tells me he needs to keep the car a couple more days, cuz he has to drop the tranny and open it up.
I will keep you all posted on my adventures.

you have any mods done to your car? sounds like you have my problem. i broke my shifter fork. a couple of us have had the same problem and i've been wanting to see who's had this problem and has had it covered by warranty with some mods to their cars. cause my dealership here is giving me hell. $1800 to fix. hope yours is a lil nicer

hey everyone,

i got some GREAT news. I got my baby back. I know some of you have had horror stories about your dealers, but I have to say I love mine. The service advisor was great from the get go.
The car drives like new. The shifter is nice and tight. I have no complaints, well except it took my awhile to remember my security code for the Kenwood. Also in the showroom is a moded miata that the dealer did themselves. Next time I am there I will take some pix and post them. Damn I'm just glad to have "her" back. I can't stop looking out the window at her. Let me go admire her somemore. Holla at y'all later.

i just have a question for all these ppl whose trannies (shifter forlks) are going.....could this possibly be from people being too aggressive with the shifter....you realize you don't need to shove it into the gate....i nice flick and it's in........i realize these problems could be because the trannies/shifter forks themselves aren't very well engineered....but i know alot of these ppl drive their cars hard.....just food for thought....not trying to get on anyone's case

Ditto...

From what you say, it sounded more like a hydralic problem with the clutch more than the tranny blowing??

What broke??

The infamous 2 to 3 shift. You probably broke your shifter fork. I had a master tech tell me himself that there is a lot going on in the tranny during that shift and they have repaired LOTS of transmitions with that problem and that Mazda's headquarters told them to look for excessive tire wear and mods on the car so they could get out of covering some of them under warranty because of hard driving. It came right from the horses mouth. Of course before he told me that, he said those famous last words, "I didn't tell you this but......". He was only sincere with me because he like my turbo kit I guess.

damn i was so excited to have her back i forgot to tell you the problem. yes it was the shifter fork that broke. what is really cool is the dealer never asked me if i drive the car hard or something along those lines. they actually apologized cuz i should have gotten it a day sooner but the tech who was working on her was out one day. i tell you i have not had a bad exper with the dealer, yet.

MR i will def take ur advice and baby her like she was meant to be. i am very conscious when shifting now to make sure i do it correctly. driving a stick after all these years, one tends to fall into some bad habits.

thanks again for everyone input.

Is this that same dealer I saw your car at that one day I dopped in up there?

strange, you'd think mazda would design the shifter forks on the 3rd gens to last more than 20k miles.

My 93' has the same transmission and a similiar, if not identical shifter fork, and i have yet to break it, and I'm not all that easy on it. It has 150k miles on it now.

How hard is it to make the damn fork not break? mazda is pretty stoopid about doing anything about this....hopefully the MSP won't have this problem
