Android Auto possible without enabling bluetooth?

I use my USB to connect to Android Auto. I almost always have my BT headset in and as such want to use that when making or receiving calls. However, when a call comes in it's routed through my car's system, then I have to hit the button to switch to phone, then on my phone I have to go to another menu to route it to my BT headset.

I've tried to un-connect/cancel BT from my phone to the car but that disables AA. Is there a way to USB my phone without it causing calls to be routed to the car's system.

I don't have access to my vehicle right now.. but reading this:

makes mention of pairing phone to vehicle via Bluetooth first, then using USB. I suggest UN-PAIRING the vehicle to the phone (make the phone forget it knows the vehicle is a Bluetooth device). Then plug in in USB for Android auto.. see what the behavior is then.

Yeah, upon reconnect to Android auto it either automatically or forces connection to Bluetooth

wasn't there an option in the infotainment -bluetooth - your mobile device setting, to select only to be used for audio and not phone?
