An option for those looking for a switchblade remote keyfob

I would be willing to organize a group buy for these things. It would have to be enough of them to make it worth effort. If I bought 10 I could ship them out for $30 even. That is $11.20 saved. If we get more I can try to do for less.

Who is in? We need 9 more people.
I'll do one......

For those of you who just ordered the keyfob, please post your experiences once you receive them and get them together.

Specifically:

- Your experience pulling the board/buttons out and putting them in the new fob (not a good DIYer, want to make sure I won't/can't screw it up)
- How you like them
- Getting the key cut (did you have the dealer do it? Somewhere else?)

I know the OP shared his experience, but the more the better.

Thanks

I got the key cut at the dealer for free... they only charge for the blank so for about 5 mins of time on my way home from work its a done deal.
The board is reversible, so pay attention when its pulled apart or you'll set off the panic when you push the lock button.
Its a bit bulky but IMO worth it.
I'm considering supergluing it shut so I don't have to worry about the key ring popping out
You will need a pretty small keyring to work with it. I bought a $1.99 padlock set from walgreens and stole the keyring from that... and threw out the locks. LOL

I will be trying to leave work early today to get these shipped out. Google maps lied to me and there was no post office where it said there was, so they didn't go out on lunch yesterday.

see post #79.....

shipped, and canada only cost another 19 cents... all in all I ended up paying just under $30 for my key... so looks like I was almost dead on... packing materials was $6.xx, and shipping was the same..

you can paypal him... but i dont think youll be getting anything in return. lol.

wagonbacker9 wanted a key fob, and rather than paying ~$50 for one, 4 of us went in on the purchase with him, cutting it down to about $30 a piece. unless for some reason he wants a second fob, i dont think he's setting up a second buy. like he said earlier, hes not "vending" them, just happened that a small group of us sent him money to order an additional 4 fobs to save on shipping cause he wanted one too.

Woo! Got it in the mail today. The dealership cut it for free, I chose to cut out the panic button. And best of all it all works! At first glance I thought it looked larger than the VW key, the plastic case part is slightly larger than the VW, but the VW has a large key chain loop that makes it just as big as this key.

my key fob came today! im very happy with the purchase. its pretty solid, with a little play/movement in the key area (to be expected cause its a moving part). i wont be drilling out the panic button seeing as how ive never used it in the last 7 years except for maybe twice when it was an accident.

as a whole, its actually smaller than i thought it was going to be. its only 3 inchs long (5 with key the key out) and a 1/2 inch wide. my favorite part of it is the emblem on the back. its slightly scratched, but thats going to happen anyway being in my pocket. from what i can tell/see, it looks like a tiny mazda emblem (it actually reflects light) cast in a clear plastic mold.

too bad i wont get to put it together for another few months though cause im away at school and left my car with my parents. :(

hmm, wonder how much longer it will take for me to get mine, as I'm only about 120 miles away from you? Probably irrelevant, I don't imagine mine would be taking the same route as yours. oooh, the anticipation....

I like how the key actually folds into the fob & not just up against the side of it where it is still visible and chrome looking like on other fobs. Getting another to do one without the panic button. Don't really like how the inside of the fob is a bit angled where the panic button sits. When you press it all together it makes the button sit slightly angled which is what helps it be easy to hit. The overall construction is good IMO. When you get the key cut, don't let the fools try to have the techs reprogram the chip in the key that's not there, lol. Had to insist that they just cut the key please. They just said OK in some condesending way like I'd be back the next day to get the non-existent chip reprogrammed all embarassedlike, lol.

So your pro5 keys dont have the chips in the keys themselves? I have a bloke on our aussie 323 site saying that our keys wont start the car without the chip thats embedded in the plastic... We'd basically have to pull the plastic off the key & insert the chip into the new switchblade remote..

I see only metal of the key under the plastic part on the Mazda key. I used the sw blade fob as soon as I walked out the door of the dealer from having the key cut & testing it in all the doors. Drove home 15 miles or so with it and drove around several places without the original Mazda key & fob in my pocket after getting home & leaving the original key/fob there & had no problems. Worked just fine all day long.
