Amber lens in headlights

Ok...I know that I have seen a couple of post on these amber lens and I just wanted to know if we have come to a conclusion on it. Is possible to take this thing out?! I know it must be annoying for those of us that have the clear side markers to see this big amber lens grining at us when we just want to take it out! Anyway, for the Mp3 owners, with the exception of putting a protege 5 set up in, is there a good way to get rid of these lenses? Any ideas?(thought)

Last I heard, you have to take off the front bumper, and then remove the headlights. Use a heat gun and carefully pry the clear plastic from the rest of the headlight.

After that you can pop out the amber colored piece. Clean it all with alcohol, get some clear sealant and reverse the process less the heat gun.

You should be all set. It is possible, it is just a little labor intesive. It takes two people to do each headlight to be safe. Go slow and becareful.

How long/hard of a job are we talking here? Do you think it is worth it? I just wish it was a simple as the side markers were......

It should be at least a two day job. First day remove everything, take apart and reseal the headlights and give them at least 24 hours to completely dry. Then the next day assemble.

I thought there was a post on how to do this in the "How-to" section. Or maybe that was on the other board.

At any rate, there are several screws you will have to take out to remove the front bumper. The fog lights will still be wired, you can either try to remove those or unplug the harness. It is recomended that you put the bumper on a sheet or something else to prevent scratches.

To prevent the down time of two days for the car, I thought about trying to track down the headlights someplace else, then doing the work to them, then only spending the day removing the bumper, remove old lights and put in the new ones. However, finding the headlights cheap is rather difficult, a junk yard would be best.

is there another mazda that has the same headlights?
I thought the protege 5 lamps were diffrent?
Do you think a junk yard would have them - they are pretty new....

01 and 02 protege es's have the same lights, lx's of the same years have the same style lights but they are chrome i believe.

Yeah, what he said...You never know what you might find at a junkyard.
