alright - here goes. KL-P5-take2

that's exactly what happened. Passenger side axle went in NP, once I got the right intermediate shaft. Driver's side had to be swapped because of the splines though - ends up that a MPV axle works, and a few others. done.

axle is in! filled it up with fluid, and immediately fired it up (took a little bit to get it started......almost reminded me of how to start an ol' school carbureted vehicle.

And........nothin but forward. No neutral. No reverse. Just.....forward - hell - I don't even know what gear really.

So - now to search for a KL atx electrical wiring diagram. Apparently I still need some wiring crossed over from the P5 to the KL. Not too much longer now.....I can taste it!

ok - update time:

Been working on this thing for too long now - finally drove it again - with the exhaust done. Just need to finish a few things and she's road worthy. STill have an issue with the transmission - but that'll work itself out with more debugging. PICS!

...no exhaust....

and like magic - INSTANT EXHAUST!

and a small clip of the exhaust note - it sounds yummy!

Damn, that sounds sooooo good!!! Glad she's coming along, mate. (2thumbs)

short (very short...) flyby.

Going back at it today - going to attempt to reset the TCM/ECU and see if that clears the "limp home mode". If that doesn't work - going to energize the 2-3 and 3-4 solenoids manually to see if it shifts. If that works - guess it's either an input/output to the tcm/ecu or.....a dead tcm.

Wish me luck....lol

if you ever have an axle problem you can cut the p5 axle in half and the kl axle in half and get a metal pipe that will fit over both and put the pipe over one axle and slide it so you have room the weld one axle to the other and then weld the pipe over the weld on the axles

thx!

Hey - did you get your AC working? What about the defroster? I'm having issues getting them to switch modes (from vents to floor, defrost, etc) and temp isn't changing at all.....what gives?

I still have a shifting issue too with that atx - 1-2 is solid as a rock, but 2-3 and 3-4 just don't happen. It's either solenoids, valve body, or the tranny is actually trashed and I'm screwed.....lol.

Heading back out there (....yet again) to go through the transmission valvebody. I have the gasket kit for the entire thing, which includes all plate/plate gaskets, case gasket, rubber balls inside the passages, new jets and filters.

I'm praying this fixes it......next step to fix it is a can of gas and a match......

You've been warned. Those transmissions are JUNK. I've had low mileage jdm transmissions go out in 6 months or less, and rebuilds sometimes seem to have a worse failure rate.

understood - I'm kinda up against the wall though.

I can't afford a full ATX>MTX swap at this moment in time (unless I found a food willing to part with ALL of his shifting stuff from a 3rd gen protege + an MTX from a mx6/pgt + a clutch for dirt cheap.) Unless all that happened for less than 400'ish (give or take) - it'll take awhile for me to pursue that option.

Hopefully its just the solenoids, but that trans is very finicky. I've heard horror stories of that trans being rendered useless just from changing the fluid in it. I've pulled many Kl engines out of my local Junk yard and I always pull them from low mileage atx cars because I know the engine is good. The last one I pulled had 81k and was not hit, motor runs strong and burns no oil. The trans fluid looked like chocolate milk @ 81k, and I've seen them in the yard with lower mileage.

I've replaced the 2-3 and 3-4 solenoids, put all new gasketry throughout the valvebody, and even went to the extent of hardwiring the solenoids to be on with a pushbutton (supplying voltage directly to them to MAKE it shift). All to no avail.......

now I've got a decision: Either continue fighting with this ATX until either I die, I quit, or it works......OR........just swap it all out for a manual trans. The MTX swap is a great idea, but time, money, and my body aren't liking it. I'd do it in a heartbeat - but there's parts to be sourced (all shifting linkage, hydraulic lines/cylinders, shifter assembly under the console with all the hardware, etc, etc....), money to be spent (which I don't have btw...), and patience.

I'm kinda stuck I guess......need this thing done! Could a bad TCM do this? I mean....it seems as if it's acting properly.....but you never know. I've flash coded it and it came up with a TPS error and a "Reduced Torque signal 2" error. Dunno what they mean in the fashion of making it not shift 2-3......but I guess I"ll have to go back to the drawrin board. Thx for listening to my rant.....

after some searching and digging - I think I've come up with a way to get this done for rather cheaply.

Pullapart G25M-R trans (from a 95PGT) - 129.99+tax + $40 core charge)
a local mazda spot here called MazMax has a 3rd gen protege that I can **** for the parts to get everything swapped - they're charge = $150 for everything
ebay special clutch - 60-100 depending on which one I get.

sounds good, yeah?

Everything but the eBay clutch. I wouldn't trust one of those and pulling everything apart to swap the clutch out again would be the suck. But I know you're on a budget so it should get you by for a while. Good deal on the manual swap.

(I could say "I told you to stick with a manual" but I won't. haha) Keep at it and keep up the good work. another month and she'll be purring like a kitten and so much fun to drive.

yeah, yeah....I know I should've done it originally - but I had my reasons.

Really appreciate all the help you've given me thus far man - pretty sure I wouldn't have gotten it as far as I did. Just dealing with that atx has killed me physically and mentally.....and I'm f*ckin done with it.

I think those axles will work (28 spline inside for the KL atx).

I used that ebay clutch in my mazdaspeed, holds the power fine, had a quality throwout bearing in the box. I also run an F1 stage 3 in my turbo miata. More than a year and no problems. Maybe i'm lucky. Many of the guys on probetalk run the ebay clutches and put plenty of power through them without a problem. You will need a 5 speed intermediate shaft, the 3 bolt version if you have a KLZE. The automatic axles will work fine.

So you like the clutch? I was trying to find a cheaper solution to run and I think you just convinced me

Here are some pics to help with the intermediate shafts. The two bolt is from my 2000 USDM Millenia and the 3 bolt is from a JDM 5-speed tranny.

Not to thread jack too much here, but I'm still not 100% clear on the different shaft bolt patterns. It looked to me like they both bolted up just fine to my JDM KLDE. ???

Thanks for the intermediate shaft pics - I've got a 3-holer currently from a 95' 626 atx (USDM). I'm guessing I'll have to change that Intermediate shaft out, with the whole change from AT to MT. Just another part to put on the list I guess....

On a sidenote: I was able to tally things up lastnight - and it'll cost about 600 to do the at>mt swap, incidentals included. And the good thing is that since I've had this thing down to the level I have - I know it pretty damn well. Talking with the powers that be today - will update on a status later.
