Mazdaspeed Protege
so idk if anyone's ever talked about this before or if anyone's done it but how sick would it be if someone went crazy with their msp and made it either all wheel drive or rear wheel drive. i was just thinkin about crazy stuff and this is what i thought.. any input? lol

With enough money you can do anything. But this crosses into "Why?" territory...

it depends what you want... a stock sti, or a bad ass modded like crazy, awesomest mazdaspeed protege out there that you have the pride in building lol

AWD built msp < a reliable fully built STI that comes AWD

It would be cheaper to build the STI and it would be faster and more reliable.

but whats better? a normal modded sti or the best msp out there haha. like i said its just a thought!!

you could do it on the cheap just would need to source parts from a european diesel protege (where do you think the bad msp intercooler system came from) that was AWD...only problem though is apparently like most of mazda's stuff it wasnt very strong

Wouldnt be that hard to do a rwd swap. Just a bunch of time. Cutting and welding and basicly making a custom rear subframe/drive shaft tunnel, fuel cell relocation ect

But there are people who jve done rwd sho focus swaps. The car wouldnt be very practical though.

focus is doing a awd setup in his msp i believe. used the rear end from a jdm or russian sport20 awd (think protege5 with fsze and awd). the transmission is not very strong though but bolts directly to FSDE from what I understand. pretty sure he just imported a sport20awd that was cut in 2. someone should ask him

ive been thinking thats the next step for my car with the toyota e153 awd trans. but really just a pipe dream as I dont even have the GTR rollin yet.

dont see why it would be very expensive if you already have tools and your time is free, whats a 10 year old mazda station wagon cut in 2 from russian cost? a couple Gs maybe + importing would be a good guess I would think.

considering a mint RARE JDM gtr goes for around 5-6K here in canada I dont see a mass produced cut in two sport20awd econobox from russia costing much.

I'd rather drop a chevy v8 and make it RWD. s*** if it can be done in a Miata......AWD would be pretty nasty though if the right components were sourced. I'd find a wrecked MSP first. And maybe go ahead and use a newer PLANNED Mazdaspeed motor.

A modded STi. . . I had an MSP and I rather have something that I don't spend so much time fixing. In fact I spent more time fixing the damned thing than I did driving it.

EDM Diesel is not AWD. It is the Japanese Sport20 that is AWD. Incidentally, the transmission and rear sub-frame, are the same as the GTR, and the rear diff is the same as well except that it isn't an LSD, so like the GTX. The setup could handle 250-300HP as long as it's not abused.
