all wheel drive/rear wheel drive MSP!!!

I think the point here is that it would require way more work than most any MSP owner would be up to throwing into an MSP. Can it be done?......sure. Worth it for the cool factor?.......depends on who you ask.

depends on what you like doing for fun. If you enjoy taking things apart and would rather build something to your own design then why not. If you just want a cheap awd car then buy a 323gtx or a wrx or evo and have a blast.

****. For what an evo costs you could get a corvette and have soooooo much fun.

Been wondering about a project like this myself. Either get a miata/rx8 rwd tranny, bpt or klze with a adapter plate, rx8 lsd rear end and stand alone ecm. Then just weld in brackets in place to mount everything.
Just like building a hotrod.

^^Agreed. I love evo's, but they are stupidly expensive even if it has 80k miles on it and has been beat to s***. I'd rather keep my little FWD econobox or get an MS6 if I want AWD. They can be had for a reasonable price.

you can buy used evo3, mazda 323gtr, older wrx etc in canada for ~5gs imported and on the road legally. guess it sucks to be in the usa.

I probably wouldnt buy one of those cars used anyway. You KNOW how its been treated. Id nuch rather get a shell and build around it.
Im sure with a junked protege and 10k i could do a rwd swap with any power train i want. Keeping it street legal is he tricky part.

On the evo front. Find 2 totaled evo's, put back together and boom evo for under 10k.

Imo, a awd protege would be pretty sick and ide love to see it done.

just think... a hotrod mazdaspeed protege.. hell yeah! i'm gonna wait till my engine explodes, get a good reliable car, and do this to my msp lol.

LOL, I love reading this kind of stuff. I am keeping my MSP as a DD and am buying my buddies 01 s4. That will be a fun once I get back.

I wouldn't do this to an msp for rarity sake. its a reasonably reliable dd with a little fun so id mod it a bit and leave it alone.

was looking at ebay for "rx8 Differential" and found a complete rx8 rear end. subframe, diff, suspension, brakes DRIVE SHAFTS. $500. would be a lot easier to make mounting points for that and strengthen the rear end up than anything else.

I'm with you steffana. I'm trying to figure out what parts I need right now to make this awd pipe dream a reality. I figure I paid 10,000 for my protege, I really doubt that this swap will cost me $20,000 even with custom fabrication, cryo treatment and performance parts. I know there was another guy trying to do it that frquents this forum. He had a thread going too, but instead of a sport20 tranny he was using a capella engine with the remaing parts coming from a jspec protege. you should look it up. good luck, and let us know if you get anymore information on a feasible swap.

What ratio is an rx8 diff?

I agree Valk, keep the MSP fwd because awd will require hacking alot out of the rear. But I will be the last one to say "no....you can't do it....its impossible". The MSP is rare, but its like a 323 gtx(USDM), in that it has a cool factor but it also is a "one off" rare car and has somewhat limited support, making it hard to sell sometimes. I like my 2wd in the MSP but miss 4wd from my DSMs. So the plan is to continue DDing the MSP with light mods and build another stupid DSM. May be something OP might want to think about.

Ya this is not the kind of platform meant for high HP, so there is really no need for AWD. I say 250-275whp is plenty of power to burn the tires, and still streetable with FWD. I love my MSP as much as the next guy, but I realize there is no point in taking it that far when there are plenty of other platforms to get you where you want cheaper and faster.

If I can afford a 2nd car to play with on the weekends sometime in the future, I would get a 240sx with the s14 body style or whatever they call em. There are so many mix and match body styles with those cars it's confusing lol. But the point is they can be had for cheap, are RWD, and can make good power with an SR or RB motor. But I'll stop pressing my nissan love on you.

im on board with you, rick. the s14s are nice, and you can always switch the s15 front end onto it.

too bad 240's are getting more expensive too. ive been considering scrapping that idea and looking into 300zx's... its a lot more car/engine, and the price difference between them and 240's is dropping.

you could prob get some awd parts from the mazda b2000? didnt they make that thing AWD? or 4 wheel drive?
