Has anyone come up with an air box mod?

I know of many cars that you can actually cut out most of the AB and make your own version of a CAI. Not sure if the MS6 would be susceptible to Hydro lock due to the air box location or not.

I can post some pics of my AB on my mother car if this doesn't make sense.

Anyone?

Uh...yeah. Airbox mod has been around since the 6 came out (basically the same airbox on MS6 and 6).

Biggest part is getting rid of the resonator in the fender, but theres also a tray inside the box.

Most people like to add a splash shield due to the wheel well vents.

air box mod, impressive gains.

Anyone considering the airbox mod, or a CAI for that matter, should read this entire thread. The air box mod can get you just as much horsepower as a CAI. Also this post has some interesting points about the cp-e MAF.

follow this link and then click on the link that is in the post that goes to the ********** site. For some reason it wont let me post direct link to the ********** site on this forum. Sorry guys but it is worth a few extra clicks this is one of the most informative threads I have ever read.

See that! I cant even type the "other mazda forums" name.

I've yet to see another dyno that repeats Sweet's gains so IMHO I don't think we can say definitely that airbox mod can yield the same gains as a CAI.

In fact, I noticed a huge difference when I went from the airbox mod to a MAFci.

well clearly to the MAFci you will see a difference, isnt it supposed to add like 20+ hp? thats the CPE one were talking about right?

so anyways about this airbox thing...anyone else have anything good or bad to share about it? j/w

What u can do is if you want to save some money is remove the lower enclosed resonator (3 bolts hold it in place)
Once u have it out , remember how it is positioned(bolts will align it anyways)

Take a portable jigsaw and cut out the front facing area of the resonator box. Dont cut out the whole front face because you still need the bolt mounts.

Reinstall the resonator.

Voila, drop in a K&N replacement filter if u want, now have a cold air intake if u block off the scuba. So depends on what u wanna follow on peoples opinion on more air or colder air for a turbo or smoother piping etc...

This will not get the filter wet at all because the opening u cut faces forward, compared to true cold air intake wich u either have to cover the vents or get a splash shield.

Hope my description is clear enough if not i could get u some pics but im really lazy!!!

Two questions: what's the downside of removing the flapper?
Is there a noticeable improvement removing the tray, and any negative effects?

Dudes i just removed the lower 1/2 of the airbox, zip-tied the K&N drop filter to the top half and let it hang baby, haha. Lets me hear my turbo spool more than stock and im sure it produces minor minor gains. :)

I've done the AB mod. Took out the snorkel and removed the plastic piece that is inside the AB on the bottom.

Noticable gains, butt dyno says no.
I do notice that the turbo spools better though and you can definitely hear the BPV and turbo more.

My opinion about the gains and response may change once i get a hold a better filter element, or I may just skip that and keep saving for a full PG SRI.

Was it worth the 10 mins I spent gutting the AB and removing the snorkel, Yes.

lower airbox resonator removal...worth it?

sorry to post on an old thread...

...but I tried the airbox resonator removal on my CX7 and found that the car actually seemed to lose torque/response at the lower end, and perhaps gained a little at the top end...

However I didn't block off the snorkel, so air was getting in both ways.

I've now restored it to stock.

Do you guys think it's worth trying again but this time block the snorkel with masking tape or something?

thanks

Satz

in my MS6 i removed the tuba/scuba/snorkel, intake resonator, and gutted the inside of the air box completely except for the filter ofc.

i felt no loss or gains, only slightly better throttle response.
Not sure how diff it is for the cx-7, but i say full gut like i did!

EDIT: err, that was before my CAI. lol

hi batou

mine is the turbo AWD model.

When you removed the snorkel, did you cover the hole?

cheers

Satz

nope. didnt think it made a difference.
i woulda thought more exposure (less restriction) to the filter is more akin to a cai/shortram in terms of rate of air intake.

if you plan to stay with stock intake for a while... might wanna get a K&N drop-in filter too.
supposedly a more efficient, less restrictive filter that is clean-able.
