whatz good everyone-I'm a new guy here and jus' bought an 2003 protoge5
2.0L, bought it with 12,000 miles. ofcourse I wanna go crazy and put stuff on it. So far I bought a short shifter TWN and works good a big differnce.I happen to have bought an MP5 6cd changer package which comes with a nice stock upper strut bar and other goodies to help with cornering. But anyway my question is this, I found an AEM short ram for it and an Injen cold air but the Injen is a little more expensive and the pockets are tight, should I go the extra mile or not and does anyone know of sites that specialize in MP5? Thanx guyz. Let me knoe? MP5 Virgin L.O.L

I got my Injen off of Nopi.com . Well worth it. The short ram does is closer to engine so air is not as cool. The down side of a cold air intake is that there is a chance water could splash in the filter. Easy fix is by an AEM bypass valve. Cheap. Try hopupracing.com They have an injen sale going on right now. I dont know anyone who has bought anything off of them though. Protegegarage.com is great though.

I know this sounds crazy, but check with your warranty before screwing with it. A simple thing like a intake can void some things from what i hear. Anyways welcome and enjoy.

pretty easy to put your factory intake back on......

dealers are pretty easy going with intake changes......

get the ebay cai, if money is really tight. i've had both (ebay and injen) and only switched to the injen because it has a CARB sticker on it for smog purposes. they performed exactly the same from what the butt dyno tells me. welcome!

watch out for ebay, the intake pipe rubs the master cylinder causing a hole in the piping.

go with either injen, aem, or even k&n.

welcome :)

some of them do. i found one with the silicone 90 elbow and it never rubbed. i've also read even the k&n cca rubs for some people.

yeah, some ebay's you have to take about 1/2 inch off the first pipe to keep it from rubbing the master cyl; easy job and worth the savings if it has to get done. i have been using an ebay for the past 2 years. no problem.....

I have the ebay SRI with a K&N. It comes with metal brackets you connect to the MAF. You need to work them a little to position the intake so itwill not rub the master cylinder. I didn't at first, and it rubbed. I fixed it, no problems in over a year.

I actually saw an Injen just last weekend with master cylinder rub on the rubber elbow, so I think it is just a matter of working it.

There are 35344099861892130983470 threads about the CAI and SRI, if you search for them.

Since you are about to venture into the modification realm, here are my $.02, from a previous post with some updates, for someone about to start modding.

Right after I got my P5, I got the intake. You have the short ram intake (SRI), which is what I have. Others have cold air intakes (cai) They are about the same on ebay, but you may also opt for name brand. I have the ebay...

The next thing I did was get rid of those god forsaken Dunflop piece of s*** stock tires. I hydroplaned within the first week or so I owned the P5. I ened up with the Yokohama AVS ES 100's. 205-50-16's on the stock rims. There are a bazillion threads about tires. These I highly recommend for rainy climates. (Bottom line, get out of the stock tired before you have a problem!)

I just got (after 2.5 years of owning my car) a Racing Beat exhaust. I got an insanely good deal on it. It is on the higher end of the pricing range, but you can score one used at a good rate if you are on the forum within the .245 seconds someone posts it for sale used. They run in the high $400 range new. There is a Mazda Sport (Mazdaspeed) exhaust which is also popular, but people have complained of droning, or an annoying sound at freeway speeds. The Racing Beat does not do that. But there are a bazillion threads about the exhaust subject too, look them up.

Then there is the tinting of windows, a stereo, springs/shocks/body kit, carbon fiber everything, etc you will see around here for sale.

Short shifter is next on my list. Kartboy makes a great one, I have seen it in person. The shifter bushings are a must. Get them no matter what. www.protegegarage.com has a B&M for only $79 and shipping right now!

Well, good luck, and check out the for sale section, and work with the Authorized Venders and sellers!"

One more thing you should consider when you mod is a header. OBX and Ractive are the most common. I just installed the ractive, and love the HP gains

Ebay and Injen perform the exact same. It's jsut a question of how much you want to pay to get that extra little bit of style from an Injen and the name. I'm happy with my ebay, but the rubber connectors are starting to show age. My advce would be get an ebay intake, powder coat or paint it, slap an injen badge on it, and get some silicon connectors. Bam, $80 injen :D

I'd say get the SRI unless you plan on doing such serious modding that the somewhat colder air will yield significant gains (turbo setup)

if you get a turbo or supercharger, you'll havea new route for air anyway, so a CAI or SRI for an NA protege would be pointless.

Well I know the WOMP comes w/one but I thought you could use the sri/cai with a turbo setup. I don't know a lot about turbo setups though so maybe not haha.

ok so revise earlier statement - if you plan on doing a LOT of N/A work, CAI may be worth it.

I had the Injen CAI. The one feature I like about it most is its ability to become a SRI. When we were hit with heavy rainstorms for a week, I took off the extension to the intake and the filter fit directly on the MAF behind the headlight. I would regularly switch between CAI and SRI and noticed no difference in power or throttle response.

If I were to redo everything again, I would get the AEM and just custom fabricate a box around the filter area to block off the heat. I ended up leaving my intake as a short ram and had a heat shield around the filter similar to this:

yay, another one from jersey. careful with the intake during inspection season though, they bitched to me about mine being too loud just with a ractive sri and mazdaspeed axleback. had to talk to the station manager to get me a pass.
