Aftermarket Cargo Cover

I'm looking for a source for a Aftermarket Cargo Cover for a 2K7 Mazda 5.
Any suggestions are appreciated.

For day to day trips is useful and covers valuables OK (plus looks good). For long trips or 5+ passengers, yeah, it's impractical (but it depends how often you do have those)

I bought the OEM cover (at a discount from www.onlinemazdaparts.com - who I recommend) after driving around for a couple of days with a new laser printer I was bringing to a friend. I had a blanket around the box - but with those clear windows - I felt like I was tempting someone, especially on city streets where I park often enough. Today I had a folding bicycle under the cover - and I no longer worry about someone breaking in for something obvious.

I agree it's not ideal when the seats are upright (since you have to take it out) - although if you know it advance, you can leave the cover in your garage. When the spontaneous need for the rear seats arises, I store the cover per the instructions sheet that came with it - on the floor, up against the bottom/front of the 2nd row seats. Not ideal, it does gets in peoples way a bit - but I think it's safe enough and I don't think it's a horrible inconvenience.

At this point (it's only been a couple of weeks, but I've taken it up and down many times already) I've been very pleased with the cargo cover - and would do it all over again.

I guess it depends on your stuff. The cover is housed in a spring-loaded "bar," with springs pressing outward towards the side panels. It very securely locks into the "cut-outs" (not sure what else to call them) behind the second-row seats. I'm very confident that isn't going anywhere - and I'm sure Mazda has some measure of safety testing they must do with it to put it in their product. The cover itself unrolls - the way a spring-loaded vinyl window blind does - but horizontally. The back end of the cover slides back into "holders"/brackets built into the back end of the cargo area. For your concerns - this might be the weakest link - as the cover is "held" in place, but I wouldn't call it "locked" in place. The cover material is thicker/tougher and less flexible than a window blind and I think would definitely help keep smaller stuff from flying about - but if you store your brick collection back there - maybe I'd have some concerns.

One important thing to note is that the cover relies on the backs of the 2nd-row seats to block access and the view from the that direction - and it's not at all sealed shut, although there are a couple of options on how the front part of the cover works. Either way you might set the front up, you can see through the 2nd row seats to view the first foot or so of the cargo area. That said, I load it such as way as to not have stuff visible from this odd angle - and I don't think the average thief would probably see it, even if I didn't go through the extra effort. Again, if the concern is stuff not fly forward horizontally- it's got to be big enough to hit the seat backs (or putting it in the reverse - not so small that it will make it between the gap in the 2nd row seats.) Maybe I'll try to take a couple of camera phone pics tonight.

I thought that cargo covers 'usually' have 2 slots that they can be put in to?

One behind the 2nd row seats, and then one behind the 3rd row seats (albeit only about 3" of the rolled cover actually showing)?

I haven't looked, but I'm guessing the 5 only has the one slot?

There is one set of slots to connect it - or so I'm told: You see, there is another set of inserts (about 6 inches back) that look indential to the inserts that cover the actual slots - some had speculated it was a second set of cargo cover slots, but I'm told that they cover something up that is unrelated to the cargo cover. As it is - they aren't far enough back to fix the cover beyond the 3rd row - and in fact, the placement seems kind of useless, so I haven't bothered to pry off the second set of inserts to look - taking my fellow Mz5-er at his word. Also, the instruction sheet that came with the cover made no mention of a second set of slots.

^^ I tried it . Check it out. It does work for my idea of reclining the 2nd row seats further, but yeah, you can see the bolts right there.

Thanks coolmazda5 for trying it out and for the pics - I guess that resolves the question - although I feel like it doesn't buy me anything - I want to be able to stow the darn thing (darn good thing) behind the third row - but it's just too tight back there to do it safely. So on the floor at the front of the 2nd row seats it will go when necessary.

^^ Yeah, I guess you need a real size minivan for that . I swap it in-between cars when the 3rd row is needed. When I had only the 06 the cover used to go to the garage or the basement when not in use (scratch)

Anyone notice the cargo cover rattling a bit?

I thought the vehicle itself was starting to rattle - from about the 2nd row passenger's seat. Maybe a seat belt buckle tapping the side - but that didn't check out and I still couldn't pinpoint the noise. I stationed my son in the back and he reports it's the cargo cover. Sure enough, when I take the cover out - I don't hear anything - put it back in - and only on certain types of bumps - those with more lateral movement than vertical - the thing rattles. Nothing terrible - but I'd ideally like things silent as they can be.

Anyone hear of this before? (Pun intended.)

I'm not sure if I follow you. Mine rattles obnoxiously when is retracted, meaning, when the cargo is uncovered. I always have it on cargo "cover" mode (fully expanded) so to avoid the noise (boom06)

So sorry I wasn't clear - I'm only speaking of when the cargo over is opened/covering the cargo area.

Sounds like yours really rattles a lot when closed (I haven't tried mine that way.) To clarify further - mine rattles just a faint bit when open. The rest of the car rides quietly enough that I hear it - again - only going over certain bumps - but they come up often enough. I think the average person wouldn't even notice. Now that I know the source - I'll keep a better eye on how I put it in place and see if it makes a difference.

^^ Yes, it rattles but not a lot really, I'm just picky I guess . The first time I heard it it was one the 08 was brand new and installed it so I thought it was noise coming from the door or something and not the cover (protest)

Wife never liked the cover for the 06, so lucky me
