Just curious if anyone out there is running aftermarket cams...did a search and not too much popped up. On that note has anyone tweeked with the tooth adjustments on the stock cams. Blkzoom I believe I caught a thread where you said you had "modified" the cams a little.

I would be interested in this as well. It looks like Crane Cams will grind some new ones if you buy a blank, but you have to specify the dimentions.

Also, I think there is a company that make adjustable cam gears. I cant think of the name of them now.

I've been curious about this, too. I did a search, but didn't find anyone with an MSP that played with the cam phasing. Does AEM make cam gears for the Protege?

Cams/ CamGears

SR Motorsports makes Cam Gears for the 2.0 FS motor they also sell the JDM Mazdaspeed cams..... (2thumbs)

Corksport's got adjustable gears on their website... I think they claimed a 6-8hp increase.

I was under the impression that the JDM cams available at places like protege5online, etc. were for an NA engine. Are there any gains to be had in a turbo application? It would be cool for a cam set and cams gears for our cars, as they are a huge upgrade on other cars (Ie. dsms get around 20hp from intake and exhuast cams in close to stock form). Anyone know how hard it is to take the timing belt off? it is a major 8 hour PITA on a dsm.

my friend ran the jdm cams from corksport (intake and exaust) even not dyno tuned he made more power than i did and we were in identical trim.(except cams.) he sold the cams to someone on this board.

Cams for N/A and cams for FI cars are very different. N/A engines like lots of overlap for high rpm power. FI engines don't like overlap because the boost can blow the fuel right out the exhaust ports and lean the mixture out.

Does anyone know the specs for the stock MSP cams? Lift and duration for the exhaust and intake? I wonder what the phasing is like in stock form.

I think the first thing to do as far as cams go is the exhaust cam...The best thing would be to have a custom exhaust cam hardwelded with a fair amount of lift since the intake valves are a lot larger then the exhaust valves.

gaa that just confused me even more with how mazdaspeed was used in different contexts...so what is the specs on the cams in the MSP currently?

all the Mazdaspeed refrences used in my post were to the Mazdaspeed name brand. like the Mazdaspeed muffler, Mazdaspeed flywheel, etc, not to the Mazdaspeed protege. Everyone on here makes that mistake and generalizes that when someone says Mazdaspeed they are talking about the protege. There are several Mazdaspeed cars, as well as several Mazdaspeed brand parts. The stock MS Protege cam specs are the same as the normal FSDE specs on that page. I can copy and paste if you still dont understand.

I ran for awhile with the intake cam advanced, then switched it back. Now you can call the cams "indexed" if you know what I mean....

The idea behind advancing the intake cam (in my mind anyways..) was to allow more fuel to enter, thus lowering combustion chamber temps. and increasing detonation resistance. However it has nasty side effects.

did you advance it using adjustable gears, or did you jump it a tooth on the belt?

hmm...wonder what that would equate to on the adjustable gears. I dont know how to tell. I would like to have the gears to go with my cams, but i cant pay 350+ for them.

One tooth is probably a few degrees. Being off by one degree can send you performance in the wrong direction (and possibly worse).

so what kind of gains are expected from the intake and exhuast JDM cams on the MSP ?
