Would you go to Afganistan to work?

my company is REALLY thinking about doing 3 jobs over there. The US govt. is really throwing around the greenbacks, and we want some.

its highway construction, and it would be for 6 months, work everyday, no days off (what else is there to do in Afganistan?), sleep in a tent city for foriegn workers (around 4000 people, french, turkish, American. etc...). Hell, they even have A/C and internet.

the drawback is that it would be in winter (epic cold in Afganistan), and some of the locals dont like us much. not to mention not seeing your wife, kids, friends, and family for 6 months.

the draw is that you would be gaurded by some US marines, 24 hours a day. and the pay is pretty good.

the pay scale is:

operators: $5000 per month, $.02 per m^2, and $20,000 bonus at the completion of the job.

Superintendants: $8000 per month, $.04 per m^2, and $25,000 bonus at completion

I would be a superintendant if I went.

but the question is, would you go?

BTW: PAY is based off of 6 months.... if longer or shorter it changes

sorry.

but i'm going with a "no" on this.

you can't really put a price on safety. plus, i don't give a **** how much you pay me, i'm not going to a place of such political, economical, and social turmoil. not worth it to me...especially when i have many things i love here that arn't worth risking all the aforementioned for.

I'd do it for the 125k.. but I wanted to also vote for the "can I take my car" option. Thats a good ammount of $, and it sounds protected enough.

but the marines would be there... 24/7 and it is technically in one of the safer areas of Afganistan

meh.

its still ******* afghanistan in the dead of winter.

i think i'd rather deep freeze my testicals in liquid nitrogen.

forgot the 5th option... r u stupid?

edit: money isnt worth ur life... i dont care how much u get paid... besides after like 1 month u will miss the hell out of ur friends and family...

uh rof. nop Wouldn't even have to think twice about it. Straight hell no, and leave the company :P You can find other places here to get 125k/y with out having to go to that place. And from what I've heard from a friend over there is that, alot of people don't like us. Not a few, but a good majority. But thats what he said, and hey, I feel the same way.. I don't like us either.

well, from what I've been told (could be total BS, who knows?) it will be pretty safe where we are at.

and as for the missing family and stuff, I just spent a 2 months straight working in Canada and the Republic of Belarus back to back (with 2 weeks at home in between) Not to mention back when I WAS a superintendant I traveled all over the US... but now that I am the electrical systems engineer for them I get to stay home A LOT more, and really I only fill in when no one else can go (like Canada and Belarus) so really I may not have a choice in the matter even if I wanted to go...

I'm just curious if you all would consider it... it is a lot of money for half a year.... just imagine making $260,000 a year.... I cant get myself to do it

hhmm....sorry I'd have to say HELL NO! Its like saying, can you go over to Iraq and help with the recontruction. Oh yeah, you will be guarded the US marines and you'll be safe. (rlaugh)

if they wanted me to move my job there for 6 months with that kind of pay, hellz yes i would. Im also 19 with no seriouls relations.

this is a hard question to answer, for me, as im not in a serious relationship atm and don't have kids or anything, this would be a hell yes for me, but if i had a wife/kids, im not sure i would do it...

i agree with jeff. but i also look at it this way. I can't let terrorists effect what i do. Not to say i take unnecessary risk but I won't their threats control my life.

having been there a few times, it is nothing like the threat level of Iraq. For us, it's a cakewalk to go there. I would say the 77k job might even be worth it. The 125k job definitely is. Plus, you can say you hands-on helped rebuild a country. How many people can say that?

id do it now doubt now no road job ever goes on time, people dont understand that afgan is not iraq its fairly safe and with the marines i would take the 125k, thats very comfortable living right there and your in a job of power so your not the b**** worker. i say take this chance if you die then thats what was meant to happen and i dont think the goverments gonna leave your family hanging and even still id get a million dollar life insurance policy so no matter what im doing it for the people i left home.

If you survived Canada (canada), Afaganistan will be a breeze LOL Just watch out for those Marines !!!! My advice: If you go, take a good insurance...

the insurance is included in that... death and dismemberment... lol it sounds funny to say though.

but honestly there is only a chance I would get to go, cause more likely than not I'll end up being sent to China in October... somewhere outside of Shanghai. too bad the pay isn't quite as good... but I wouldn't have to hardly work any... just as an electrical guy safety net for the Super running the job in case the machine goes bonkers on them
