AEM short ram install question

hi everyone,

i just installed the aem short ram for my p5 and i have a question about a strange behavior that's cropped up as a result of this install.

when i start off my car from a dead stop i can hear a straining sound from somewhere in the engine compartment. as this sound is emitted i can also feel the gas and brake pedals rattle around a bit. both of these effects dissapear as i accelerate into higher gear. it never behaved like this with the stock airbox installed.

it just doesn't sound or feel right. am i being paranoid about this? i can imagine that there may be some sort of break in period for the part, but the rattling (especially on the brake pedal) is worrying me.

thanks... Rob

Search, please. :D

Welllll, since "AEM" and "ram" are both under the minimum search querry length (4 letter min), intake would probably turn up 300 posts, and I am sure he didn't want to sift through all the threads with "short" in the message I'd say a search wouldn't prove super usefull :D

hi robgaloshes
I can answer that question for you....Its a serious problem.........The reason why your brake and gas pedal is rattling it coz you AEM is rubbing againest your brake resouvior. Why do I know this ?? Its because I have a Ractive Intake and the same problem occured.
And if you still haven't fixed the problem, I don' recommend driving it for long distance.
A couple people had this problem and didnt get it fix, and guess what, it rubbed a hole in their intake pipe.

A little bit of info on this link.

Here is the picture. You see where I circled it. Thats where the rubbing occurs.
Check under your hood. You might already damaged your AEM.

And after all these talking, and its still not the problem, can't help you there bud. :)

thanks for sharing your experience. the pic helped out a lot because i'm still very new at all this (it's my first car!).

i took a look at it this morning before driving to work and was able to see exactly what you described. i may end up taking the whole thing out tonight and trying again after this weekend because i have a trip planned for the weekend (~250 miles).

yeah, unfortuneately it did a little bit. i tried to re-fit it and could not find any possible way that it would fit into a non-compromising position. i even checked with aem before i ordered the part and since i have an auto tranny they said i needed the short ram for the 1.8L protege (pt#22-480), which is smaller than the normal 2.0L one! i guess i'm just out $100. :(
