AEM ems for Mazda Protege 01+

How is this better than the much cheaper Haltech Juan of HiBoost uses for his kits?

Here's my AEM

Damn, I guess thats a few small changes (omg)

How many more "small" changes are you going to make (sorry to thread jack)

yes, keep in mind that the computer software is upgradeable as well as the firmware on the box. you can download new software from aem when they do the upgrades.

Is that the same software for all AEM EMS regardless of model?

Fuel cell, composite fenders and truck either: fiber glass, plastic or carbon fiber, built motor: pistons, rods, crank, head, cams etc., and finsih tubing the front end out.

Same guy that got your working right Andy at Wagner Motorsports. http://wagnermotorsports.net/enginemanagement.htm Mine unlike yours is full standalone and Andy and I are still tweaking it. Hopefully with the next month will have some dyno numbers. FYI we are also running the AEM CDI box and UEGO with cutom injectors and Coil on Plugs off a Honda Motorcycle totally new terrain we are venturing into.

 I still have the factory ecu (well, the Protege5 ecu) with my AEM EMS. Yeah, your car has a lot more work done to it then mine. Mine's a daily driver and it's my only car at the moment.

Andy didn't do anything with my AEM, that perfworks guy did. I have made some necessary adjustments and am adding some sensors.
But I am having someone else tune it now, someone with a lot more experience with the AEM EMS.

Glad to hear you're running well with the AEM as a standalone.

How functional is the AEM unit from Wagner? Does it come with all necessary cables and adapters to hook it up? Also, what sort of map library is there out there for the AEM EMS and the protege?

Apparently biknman, spoond, and philly-orange all have AEM EMS units from Wagner, so they might share their calibrations if Wagner does not already have them. Wagner does not have my .cal file.

The AEM that Wagner sells should come with the harness and a wiring diagram, a 3.5 bar map sensor and an IAT (intake air temp) sensor, as well as any necessary wires. From what Wagner told me recently (this might have changed), they are not providing or supporting knock sensors.

I do not have this setup, because my harness was made by perfworks, and I do not have a map sensor or an IAT installed yet (I finally bought these two sensors in the last month). The factory knock sensors can probably be adapted to work, but I am also adding a GM knock sensor because the AEM is familiar with the way the GM sensors are calibrated.

I have map/calibration files for my EMS. I still have a few more modifications to make, but my car is running very well. Wagner does not have the working .cal files that my car is now using to run properly because he did not set up the AEM on my car.

More information is available on the sensors and setup that work with the AEM EMS on other types of cars at http://forum.aempower.com/bbs/

For further tuning, I would recommend finding someone with a lot of experience tuning the AEM on different types of cars.
And feel free to ask if you have any questions on my setup.

As far as Andrew at Wagner Motorsports experience with AEM installing or tuning from what I know he has done several Honda's a couple EVOs including his daily driver various other Mitshus he also has in the works or done various other Euro (VW Audi) and Japanese cars. Best to talk to Andrew direct if you have questions about the AEM. Now with his AWD dyno he is hard to bet. Several years ago when I was looking for somebody to work with on custom performance mods to my car Andrew was the only reasonable guy that would talk to me with any respect to what I wanted to do and my budget. In fact most of the dick heads in Maryland wouldnt even give me the time of day unless I was throwing down 10K up front and willing to leave my car with them for a year. Andrew was the first guy offering turbo kits to the Protg crowd. Or at least was the first guy that would actually make me a turbo manifold for my Protg and I was in contact with them all.

Things have changed significantly in the last few months at Wagner Motorsports i.e. he finally has dedicated workers who know what the **** they are doing and not full of s*** and ripping him off. He is still the only guy that stands behind his work for a lifetime and his turbo kits are still the best for the money that I've seen on the market and I've been in this game for a long time. A lot of outfits make great kits for ads or to sponsors in cars but when you get the kit its crap and the money most of them a charge is at a 200-300% mark up from what they are actually putting into to the kit.

Roni,
I'm really glad that Perfworks worked out for you. I hope the realtionship keeps working with you and Perfworks and great things come off it for you.

Nick ****** my AEM (had to get a completely new box) all up including trashing several of my sensors, my UEGO, and destroying a $150 race battery, he spent all summer on it with absolutely no positive results. In fact I lost almost half my hourses with Nick's expert tunning. Only thing Nick did for me is costing me, my co-driver, and Andrew a s*** load of money and wasted time. So I never got to race the car this summer. Andrew and I have ripped out everything stock electrical in the Protg and have started from scratch. We will not be using anything stock electrical except the alternator, starter, and fuel pump. Nothing is stock about the car now any-who except the external body (hood is CF), fuel tank, head and block, transmission case and gears, front axles, and steering rack.

Since the Protg is not factory tunned by AEM directly and there is all different flavors of Protg out their in the last few years. Id love to see some one finally come out with a piggy back that was worth a damn. Andrew is the only guy with one on the street that I know of and will sale one to you today. As far as maps/programs Im in the custom apps/programming business and industry wide the programs (source codes) we write are our bread and butter. So getting anybody to give out custom maps is kind of hard but basic maps are available to get you started or you need it custom tuned to your mods or liking. Andrew will more than likely be happy to dyno tune our car for you if you where to purchase an AEM from him and youd have a lifetime of customer support. Not so with many other companies, again talking form many years of experience and wasted money. Ive seen Andrew on the dyno tune an extra 100whp into an Eclipse with just a couple dyno runs. So is tuning ability and experience is defiantly at the top. And agin I've been on the dyno with many a techs that jsut wasted my money or ****** up my car.

Roni and biknman, did you have to change out your cam or get the two of the three cam pickups ground off?

Me personally we have went with a custom cam sesnor and I have custom cam gears so I'm not the one to ask. Also I have the 1.6 motor not the 2.0. The cams themselves are still stock. Here a pic sorry it so blurry guess I'm getting old so either may hands or eye are going hehe.

Right, I meant cam gear. Beau is getting the software reworked so that the cam gear doesn't have to be messed with. He is also getting plugnplay harnesses put together so that the end user doesn't have to cut, splice, or solder. Any day now!

My MSP with the AEM EMS works great, my car is at Wagners shop now getting Forged Internals in and some other work done to the engine when it's done I'll let you know how it is and what the dyno results are. Good Luck biknman and car looks great when I was up there.

Okay. Lets get set this straight. Nick still has the keys to my car and is responsible for my stock injectors disappearing mysteriously. After repeated requests for him to return my keys and injectors, he still has not come through. Last I heard, he was in some other state or something. When he was arrested he had my baby, my only car, (later found at his apartment complex) and if you think the perfworks situation didn't piss me off, you've got to be kidding. My car was missing. Nick screwed a lot of people, myself included. I am just glad that I was lucky enough to have a mostly working car after that whole fiasco.

I didn't take to that situation lightly, and I did everything I could to make sure that Andy got the extra AEM EMS that was in the backseat of my car and all the other parts that were left there. I had this stuff overnighted to him. Andy Wagner did what he could to help me out. Andy Wagner did build me a beautiful exhaust manifold (see my sig for pics).

Wagner Motorsports is a little far from me and after repeated trips out there, I am reluctant to make that journey again. It's too far for me, there's no easy way for me to "drop my car off" without imposing on my boyfriend, friends, or family. I found a local AEM tuner who has fixed a lot of the problems with my calibrations, and I will be having my car tuned on the dyno at the shop with all the sensors and the boost control solenoid finally in place.

I am not sure how much experience Andy has had with tuning the AEM, but I know the people I'm dealing with now have almost 2 years into tuning this EMS on a multitude of cars. If people order the AEM from Andy and get all the parts, their calibrations will still probably have to be fine-tuned and adjusted because many of the Proteges have different setups. One map won't work perfectly for everyone. So they have to find a tuner in their local area who is adept at adjusting the calibrations to work optimally on their setups.
