AEM ems for Mazda Protege 01+

Usually the AEM kits run between $900 and $1500 for a standalone unit...you're telling me this will be non standalone and cost over 2k? Might just have to get some wiring diagrams and build my own...
ill tell you right now that if you want the box itll run you about 1600... then you spend all the time to install it and tune a map. This is plug and play... well worth the cost.

Used and on ebay?
Also, are you saying you would buttsplice all of those wires into your harness?! Wow, take some advil before you start to take care of the headaches....

yeah, reamember that this isnt just the unit itself, there is a MAP sensor included (roughly $125), full plug and play harness, including harness for CDI box (believe it or not but the Mazda plugs required to make it "plug and play" are UBER expensive) and the time to make the harness, the base maps (think dyno time) AND the creme de la creme, a way to make this work without ANY CEL's and no gear tooth shaving!... think about it, and he is only charging roughly $500 for this over the rough estimate of $1600 or the EMS itself? you'd be insane to try to duplicate this yourself

*edit* not trying to insult anyone, just making a point

why i didnt want to get into it. This thread does not need to turn to s***... but s*** i forgot all about the msd... i mean s*** 2100 is a steal in my eyes.

standalone's are not cheap. Beau is doing a lot of hard work and busting his ass to get you guys something great. It costs a lot of money to do these things and the risk is high for the vendors as well. Don't underestimate what this stuff takes...

It's been attempted by many, and accomplished by few. Whatever the price is set at I'm sure it is set to be fair and viable!

Mad props to Beau for that project and all the work involved!!!

I think some are just underestimating what it takes to make the harness. Beau was telling me that it took him all day (about 14 hours) to solder and crimp all those wires into the connectors on that harness. That's some massive labor. Perhaps you can do it yourself if you can find the connectors (good luck) and your time isn't worth very much...

You kidding... doing soldering and harness work takes no time at all.... :) LOL... oh wait... sorry... it's the other way around... Harnessing is a b****, proprietary connectors suck for cost... and understanding the wire mapping necessary to get that harness right is a massive pain! Beau is one crazy man :).

And almost no "standalone" is really run as a standalone any more... too many people like their dome lights, AC systems, security systems, etc etc etc that can't all be done the standalone in and of itself. Almost always they are run in parallel now to handle the motor and let the ECU do the rest...

I have a working AEM in my Protege, it's running quite well. I know of only 2 other people that have Proteges with the AEM in them, both from Wagner, (spoond and philly-orange) but I do not know how they are running.

Anyone else?
Yes I have the AEM EMS and works great the system is amazing you have so much controll over everything. My AEM EMS runs off a 3.5 bar map sensor. And my knock sensors aren't hooked up either. Roni and I are the first to run the AEM EMS in a MP3 and Mazdaspeed.

vielster, the AEM runs in parallel with the stock ecu. The stock ecu still controls everything else like speedo/tach/dome light...whatever. Until AEM deals with the EECV datastream, it will be in parallel.

so this thing should be done or just about done according to Beau's last eta. How's this thing commin along? Not pressuring just anxious to see this beast up and running.

You are correct.
When I release it on the market I will answer all the questions then.Let's just yes progress is great and everything is on track. When we release info it will be of an NA and FI setup.

Yes he is right about the factory ECU and what it works.

no major reason for the AEM to take over the other stuff.. it just becomes extra things to worry about. As long as the engine is being controlled by the standalone that is all that matters... leave everything else to the ECU and call it good :).

yea that is true...maybe if AEM sees the success that can be had with the when mated with an EECV in parallel they will put a full standalone into production..just a thought

Well, as Beau has just found out, there is a major reason...about $600 in harness extension. DOH!
