Aem air straightener for Mazdaspeed CAI

and parallel to MAF is just that...parallel. The relation to vertical carries no relevance in this situation.

Just line the vanes of the straightener parallel to the sides of the MAF. It's that simple. Parallel to the MAF is 45 degrees from vertical. All the same thing. Match the AEM photo, tighten it all up and drive the thing. Don't know who made the other photo, probably not AEM or Mazda, just some guy's own idea.

Once again you are wrong. Mazda in it's instructions indicate that the Air straightener is supposed to be rotated the 45*

Initially that is the way I had it orientated and still tripped a CEL. If you have the AEM version of the cai, then follow their instructions. If you have the MS version of the intake then follow the mazda instructions. There has to be a reason they did it that way. Since following the mazda instructions, I have had no cel in over 400 miles. Before it took me about 200 miles to re-trip it.

I followed AEMs instructions and have the vanes parallel to the MAF and have had no issues or CELs or abnormalities while driving. However I have heard about people having issues with this orientation. I have put on about 3,000 miles with this setup and as stated no CELs.

I agree there has to be a reason for why Mazda rotated the air straightener, but the AEM CAI and MS CAI are identical if I recall correctly, and fine the differences in orientation odd.

As do I. There has to be some minor design difference between the two or something. if I felt like wasting a couple hundred bucks, I would buy an AEM and do a side by side comparo. notice i said "if" (lol2)

Well just by looking at the instructions there are no extra bends or obvious differences. It would be interesting to see a detailed comparison, because like you said there may be some minor differences.

nice nice. I was looking at the you tube and recall when we first saw that on the forum! It still looks like driver 311 and Laloosh have the fastest quarter milers according to dragtimes.com. But it looks like someone here is closing in on that. What is your build date 32007? Mine was 2/07 with a delivery in May and dealer installed Cold air.

yea mine was i believe the same date. the only thing that comes with that build date is the fuel pump from what i read. if they fall into a certain manu date they blow. i need some internals on mine asap. with the internals and a tune i plan on getting within the next few months im taking her up to epping to see what i can get out of the quarter. so far according to the AP i can get a 0-60 ft at 2.2, a 0-60mph 5.5, and a quarter at 13.7. but with the fp and a tune i think with a little launch practice i can get some better times out of it. plus my tires are almost at the end of their life.

I give up guys. Position it any way you deem prudent. I have no difficulty understanding what it means for two objects to be parallel to each other, which has nothing to do with degrees from vertical. I also understand what vertical means. However, reference to vertical does have meaning in this situation because its use informs an alternative way to explain the proper orientation.

I've tried my best to put forward the case that in this instance placing the vanes at a 45 degree angle to the right of vertical as you view the installed intake just also happens to make those vanes parallel to the MAF.

I say this is the same orientation and that there is no difference in proper straightener orientation between the AEM and the MSCAI, only a difference in the instructions.

So I leave the debate to those with a better knowledge base and elocution than I. If someone should develop objective evidence that the parallel placement is not correct. I'll make the change and acknowledge any mistake.

i was wondering about manufacturers dates on the cold air and if there was a maf location change that would cause allthis confusion about the installation. mine was done as per aem cold air instructions. And 32007 my fuel pump was replaced under warranty with the reflash to get it up and running. Sorry to go off topic and i am done with that

This is why I asked if the Mazda instructions were posted anywhere! Proof positive that they want the thing oriented one way or the other.

So I think I will install mine at 45* as above. I'll update with any CEL issues.
I have the AEM straigtener but a MS CAI. I wonder if there will be any fit issues? I know it will fit but how snug?

I have the same set-up as you and I ran a quick layer of electrical tape around once to make sure it didn't move.

Thanks, GoFast. I stand corrected.

It is the alignment mark that lines up with the MAF and not the vanes. I'll check mine and fix it. I'm getting no intake related CEL's, but I trust Mazda (and GoFast's post of their instructions) for the way they want it done. For some reason, my shipping box had the straightner but did not have the separate instructions.

I agree. Debate ended.

To me, the real reason that check engine lights will stop for atleast the next few months is weather. It is getting much warmer out. I think the real test of the air straightener will come when it starts getting cold again. That is when we will start seeing some big changes in the ltft

Mine was on in the parallel position all winter and no CEL's related to intake. But realignment may make things even better, so, I'm switching tonight. I do get CEL's but the numbers match the O2 sensor issues related to the catless DP/RP.

Maybe somebody should put up a poll asking people which direction they are going to install their air straightener to end the debate.

or they could just read the whole post and see that it is ended already? (dunno)(lol2)
