Add me to the blown turbo list hehe but replaced under warranty

hmmm so my loud whistle sound is possibly a messed up turbo? I have always thought that I was just not boosting that much and thats why my car was slow and the whistle was just the turbo spinning. I brought my car in last month to have them see what was wrong and they said it was fine, now you got me worried.

thanks DSM by the way im from Tampa too but now i live in dallas tx. in fact i graduated from bloomingdale high school in brandon and i was born at Macdill AFB.

Just to add to the topic;

I had my turbo replaced several months ago because it was leaking oil and there was a small amouth of oil on it's underside suggesting it was probably not getting proper lube (or starving) so they replaced it. At this point I'm past the point of return on modifications but I keep a close eye on oil levels and look for residue everytime I stick my head under the engine bay..which is pretty frequent. BTW my car showed no other symptoms of this problem. Sounded healthy and was only noticed because I had cracked my stock exhaust so I had my head down there.

I just looked at my turbo and noticed that there is alot of oil residue all over it as well as splashed on parts surrounding the turbo

I don't think I like this thread. I do have some minimal oil on the bottom of my turbo; Don't really lose any oil between changes though. My Forge is already really dirty even though I greased it last month. I do hear the turbo spool up real loud, I always just figured it was because the air filter is in the engine bay, not down in the fender.
I took the car to the only MazdaSpeed Dealer in the area when I bought it and they said, "Yeah, we know this car. The whole thing is void of warranty because of the CAI." I said WTF?? Either way, they wouldn't touch it under warranty. I guess this all just answered my question about selling the Tempo as my POS-go-to-work car. :(

Edit: Holy Moly, I just looked at the dates on this thread....
but I still don't like it.

I blew the swing gate on mine. Dealer laughed when i tried to have the warenty work done. I got pissed off and decided to go with an aftermarket setup. Thumper with GT 30/40R.

wait wait.....a turble "whistle" isnt normal?..... you hear a whoosh between 2k rpm and about 5.2k - 6.5k rpm then it whistles like its reached max load.... then I hit the next gear and the process starts over again...

the whistle isnt loud or anything but I thought it was normal?? looks like Ill be underneath my car today.... (ugh its like 104 degrees out)...

so youre saying I too should be worried?

hey im having the squaling problem too.. i thought it was my belts at first so i got them replaced. it didnt do it for around 50- 60 miles then it came back. does anyone know if it is the turbo? did you guys with this problem get any answers from your dealer?
mike

CAI will void warrantee on your turbo???(shocked) Thats pretty crappy because a CAI doesn't do anything other than increase the airflow, which the stock intake system does too. Just not as well. I hate it when the dealer gives you heat about dumb s*** like that. If my turbo breaks, im putting the airbox back on, and they can fix it anyway.

ok well i had the guys at mazda look at my car becuse of the squeeling sounds that came from the engine when i got it to around 3500 rpms and they said that it was from my ac compressor??? does any one know about this or has had this problem before?

Whats going on mang.....ive taken my car to Mazda Of Clear Lake for the past 5 years, ive made friends with techs so i usually dont get any trouble from them. I actually just got a call back from my tech, and he said in fact the turbo was gone.....he said the compressor wheel was rubbing against the housing. He couldnt figure out how it happened cause nothing was loose, but that fugged everything up and caused the turbo to go out. He already replaced it, and will be ready for pick-up in the morning!! Good news for me, i was getting worried that it may take awhile to fix.

from what ive read the whining or squealing sound is from the turbo and that it is normal--though this post makes me worry because my car does this. the a/c thing sounds wrong. it does it with the a/c off doesnt it?

If your A/C is on and your boosting, it's really bad for your car, because the a/c is already putting a strain on the engine along with the turbo ramming more air into the engine. It sounds possible that the a/c compressor may have had something to do with it, but not as a direct result of a blown turbo. I'm no tech, so I could be wrong though.

There is a light whine when your turbo spools which IS normal. If you have a CAI or RAI you will be able to hear it more clearly. I hear it all the time and my car is fine. You really have to gauge how severe the sound is to determine whether its borken or not. Hope that info helps out a bit.

ya i ca tell the difference when its my turbo spooling or when its the compressor.. but the compressor doesnt do it all the time but 9 out of 10 time i drive my car its with the windows down and ac off so im not putting much strain on it to put the wheel against the housing?? but is any one sure that this will lead to a turbo low out or any other major fixes????
thanks for all the info so far
