ABS/Side Airbags?

Hey all, i just bought a used 2002 (first 2002) p5. I understand that the p5's with ABS came with side airbags. Was this the case with the first gen of 2002 canadian P5's? Maybe i'm blind, but just looking at the seat on the side, i cant tell whether it comes with the side airbags or not. i believe my particular one is loaded, including sunroof and 6 disc changer, but no leather.

I'm not sure about the Canadian ones, but the US ones that came with side impact/ABS have little plastic tabs on the side of the seat, on which is written something to the tune of 'Do not cover, Side Impact Airbags'. Also, leather wasn't offered in 2002, I'm pretty sure. =)

Which is fine with me. I don't like leather. Hehe.

You could also brake heavily on a dirt road to see if it has ABS. =)

If there is a label that says "SRS" on the side of the seat then you have side air bags. That is the only way you can tell for sure because the seats look identical to non-airbag seats. I think there is also a wiring harness to power the airbags under the seat. I'll have to check when I leave work today. Non-airbag seats would have no need for a wiring harness.

For 2003 if you got ABS you got the side airbags also. I don't know if the same is true for 2002 (or Canadian for that matter). Leather was only an option for 2003.

Edit: To be sure you have ABS there is an easier way. When you start the car, the ABS light should come on briefly then turn off. There is no ABS light on a non-ABS car. (duh!). If the light stays on there is a problem with your ABS system.

When I bought my 2002, the sunroof, Side-Impact airbags and ABS came packaged together... couldn't get one without the others.

For 2003 (US) it was:
ABS + Side Air Bags as a package
Moonroof + 6-disc changer as a package

For 2002, you could get the moonroof seperate. I have the moonroof, 1 disc, side airbags, and ABS.

yeah, i have an abs light on my dash, so i know the car has ABS and front airbag. on a side note, i do recall seeing a used 2002 p5 with leather at a dealership but the leather might have been aftermarket, or maybe they started offering it with the canadian 2002.5 model perhaps.

anyway, yeah, i'll have to check it out when i get home to see if i see any SRS labels on the seat. if any canadians with first run 2002's have any input on this it would be much appreciated, especially with the package options...i dont know what mine would have came packaged with or without.

My dealer put Katzkin leather seats in my 02 P5. They use special stitching for the side airbags on the seats.

The Canadian P5 never came with side airbags even as an option.

We got the ABS standard.

In the US, they got the rear subwoofer, the side airbags, roofrack, and I believe that ABS was not standard equipment in the early years.

As for the leather seats, again they are not standard equipment. They are optional depending on the dealer and who they outsource that job to. You can do better if you got it done yourself.
