A Rebuild Story - A Forged MP3 Motor

Good luck. Why don't you try putting a breather filter on crank case instead of routing it into the intake?

I've thought about it... but I want to vent the crankcase given how much boost I'll run just to ensure less risk of popping seals and so forth.. overall I just think it will be better, but it'll obviously chew some oil.

looks good Steve :) the welds are nothing special but you wont see that in the car :D lol

I'm hoping the Jet-Hot will help the look a little as well, but this is the DP so it isn't all that visible anyway...

Here is one I don't get... To get my 3" exhaust coated by Jet-Hot it costs 20 dollars per linear foot plus shipping... that means that at 18" of coated linear area on this exhaust, I'm looking at about 30 bucks to have it coated plus shipping...

now compare that to my turbo manifold which is not anything all that complex, large, or special... and they want 130 bucks for that... WTF Mate!?

I have a bunch of pictures I should put up.... but wanted to do an update for you guys...

got the car running last week... fired up and idled on the first crank (so much for those terrible big injectors and that standalone eh? No cold start we're told). Everything is GREAT! Even the oil issue is gone which means I was having a backup problem or a poor seal on the oil feed lines on the turbo. I adjusted those because of the exhaust and it seems to have eliminated the issue. Also, the bigger piping all around and the improved gasket seals I'm sure helped a ton as well.

So one of the BIG things was that last year on the first external actuator I had running no boost controller I'd get about 7 psi... then I went to the bigger actuator later in the year and was able to get that to abotu 8 psi both of them though with the EBC connected peaked out about 13 psi and I'd get boost surge etc... so could never get more out of it than that...

Well as of now I'm not running the EBC at all yet, same actuator that gave me about 8 psi... and I now run about 16-18 psi!!!! Insane... so any question about if my exhaust was restrictive or not should be officially answered :)

The car idles and spools far better than it did and sounds much cleaner as well, so the exhaust was a HUGE limitation previously... glad that has been resolved. Early july I'll be doing a big dyno to go for max power (about 23 psi max I'll run). Don't want to do it before in case the transmission grenades on me or so forth as I have a drivers school june 24th, so I want to make sure the car is intact for that, and that I have money for fixing the car if need be.

Mods/Changes on this go-round (pictures to come)

160F thermostat (stock is 190)
Thermostat relocate and heater line re-run (soft hose now instaed of hardpipes)
1.75" cold side outlet elbow
Ported turbo compressor outlet
Evo III 16G O2 housing - ported and polished and matched to turbo
3" DP ported and matched, jet-hot coated

JIC Coilovers added
AWR rear trailing links added

I think that covers it!!

Oh... and I was peeling the tires at a roll on wet pavement at 60 mph ;).. just feed in throttle and slide!! Even could do it a little in 4th gear from time to time.

Well my horsepower goal is "I'll be somewhat okay with it if I make 375 at theg round... pretty happy if I crack 400.. and jumping for joy if I crack 450" My formal goal is "as much as 22-24 psi will produce"

No idea on quarter.. might run it in late July... will have new dynos in early July... It wouldn't be unreasonable for the car to run in the 11's... but 12's is more likely.

I'll be doing more pics etc and documenting it on our website in the next few weeks as I get more and more caught up on projects!

Thanks,

Steve

I think within about 1 year I`ll be tryin for the 450WHP mark. There`s a guy heer in town hoo`s really good at tuning and has a dyno at his shop. I`m pretty good at tuning also. So, if I`m set on it, you can do it too. I probably just have more time to mess around than you. You seem busy as poo all the time. So, I can sit there for hours and hours and you probably can`t... But, hey don`t try too hard, cause whatever you hit I wanna pass it.

LOL.. yeah, finding time to fiddle with stuff is a pain in the butt... I'm basically doing the power to prove out what needs to be done to be reliable and consistent. We were the first to put together the combination of transmission cooling, redline shockproof, and GTX gears to ensure transmission strength, and just generally how to daily run a car this powerful without issue. Not all that worried about power, just about doing well with what is there... at over 300 it's already amazing how little traction there is and how fast the car is.. so not too super worried :) But feel free to learn and pull whatever you need from this thread to get to your goals! And don't forget to get some stuff from us ;) LOL.

i can attest to what a monster steve's car is - he very kindly agreed to take me for a ride at the Delafield meet last friday. two words sum up The MP3: HOLY s*** :D

there were some side and back roads in behind the brewhaus that were decently twisty, and with the late hour, no one was on the road. some of the corners that i would probably max out at 40 or 50 mph he took i'm sure somewhere close to 80 or 90 mph and the car was planted solid. no body roll or lean to speak of.

btw Steve, what do you top out at (speed-wise) in 1st, 2nd and 3rd? I tried to watch but I was too busy holding on, lol (in a good way, believe me).

like everyone else - and i'm sure you're dying to know too - i would love to know the actual numbers you're putting down currently. are you finished tinkering around with it, or are you still fine-tuning things?

I don't remember the top speeds in each gear... 2nd is like 59 mph.. 1st I think is like 25... 3rd is up there pretty high etc... I've never found the top speed of the car. I know at 145 it was still accelerating like it thinks it was only doing 40 mph on the highway...

I'll be doing the big dynos to see what I can get out of it in early/mid july. I'll be past some important races and a driver school so I'll have the luxury of risking the damage to the transmission from the power and see how I come out basically.

I still need to post pics of all the tweaks I did this spring... nifty stuff :)

Hey, I`m runnin pretty strong on the stock motor right now... probably 275 or so at the weels. i got 260 at the weels with 11-12psi on my crappier AFC and after i did some work im at around 16psi on a way better piggyback. i think im gonna keep my parts in my closet for a while wen i get em. my motor makes a tapping/ticking noise at idle, but i think its normal. i dont know y there`s so many blown motors at around 10-11psi and im ok. i think people just dont tune. wat exhaust setup u got on that car steev? oh and if u have the stock 5th gear ratio, u should be redlining at around 153 or so. i know...

well the motors will hold for a while.. but it's pretty much known/guaranteed that at some point if you are above 200 ft-lb's of torque you WILL throw a rod.. just from strenght.. not even a tune/detonation thing...

The tapping/ticking is probably lifter tick or your injectors... pretty normal/common if you listen close to most of the mazda's..

my exhaust is all custom.. basically stainless 3" pipe from the turbo all the way to the tip... no cat or resonator, just one magnaflow Race Series 3" muffler... I might add a cat and resonator next year after I do my power numbers this year... just make it quieter and more legal basically... just a simple thing.

yeah, i figured u had 3" turbo-back. ive got the same exhaust setup pretty much. except i have a BIG muffler at the end. so its pretty much 4" axle back. eesh looks a little big but ehh, sounds good, not buzzy.

I NEED PICS!! Your car is insane.
not the greatest pic due to the low light and no tripod, but Steve's car is the one at the end. hope you don't mind Steve :)

Bump to the top..

also.. if I find the dyno scan I'll post it again... my last dyno was about 308 whp at 16 psi on 93 octane pump gas with no water/meth/nitrous or anything else. Also, on a dyno dynamics. A previous dyno for the car was 258 at 13 psi on a dynojet and prior to my additional exhaust work.

Holy crap, you still playing with that thing? I woulda thought it'd fall off by now. lol

LOL... yeah.. knock on wood, but still not a single thing has broken or gone wrong since I build this thing up. And it goes through a fair amount of autocross and so forth every year too.
