A good tale of a first race

I've owned my yellow un-wagon for about three months now. At 5300 miles, I feel like the break-in period is over and I drive it, while not at all recklessly, opened up enough to have some fun with.

This night was the first night my friend had possession of his black mica pro5. The odo read all of 110 miles - practically a newborn! We both got off work and decided to head off to the local greasy spoon for some vittles. As we're leaving the parking lot, we spot a large cluster of headlights at the Target across the street. Curious...

I'll say right off the bat that we both loathe, hate, despise, malign and scoff at Ricers. When I say ricer I mean the guy who buys a rusty, crusty Civic or late 80s Prelude, spray paints it and slaps on a bomb muffler and a giant wing....I mean the guys who throw Japanese font stickers on some domestic crapper like a Cavalier. Bascially the guys who are all show and no go - those kind of ricers.

Anyways (sorry to trail off), my bud and I pulled into the parking lot, and being the outsiders that we were, we got a bunch of stares. After one guy gave a disapproving sneer, we both knew this was not the place for two fun loving Mazdas to be. We pulled a set of slick 180s and laid rubber on the way out of the lot.

That's when he showed up. As we came up to the left turn lane, a tinted, banged up, noisy POS 1989 Honda Accord slid into the lane next to us. I checked my bud in the rearview and gave him the nod. The green light snapped....and this dude was gone! We had been duped by a beater sleeper! We both quickly hit the rev limiters and hung with the Accord as we snaked through the left turn and then quickly to a right turn on to the main road. The next light turned green, and after some hesitation the Accord driver swung back into the lane next to us for some more fun. This is where I found out that the Injen truly makes a difference. Both of us were flooring the gas, with me a car length or so ahead of my friend, and the Honda nudging past us.

The radar detector went wild once we hit the interstate bridge, so on instinct I cut back, letting the Accord and other pro5 pass. At this point I had been well above 80, so I can only hazard a guess as to how fast the other two were going. At the other end of the bridge sat a squad car with his door open, parked at the gas station. The cop, with food in hand, watched the first two scream by, swerving in between a pair of slower cars. Then I passed, and I could only smile at the sweet Jesus look on his face.

I followed both of them into the greasy spoons parking lot. All three of us exited our cars. Both my friend and I had two passengers in ours, which raised the Accord drivers eyebrows. He was pretty impressed that we were able to even compete with that kind of load in the back seats. My friend was still shaking off the adrenalin rush, and when the Accord driver saw his odometer, he scolded jokingly him for racing such a low mileage car.

What we found under his hood was a slew of parts from the land of the rising sun. This car was the real deal, and for once Ive seen gauges on the A-pillar that actually do something :) He dynoed the car around 160 crank hp, all naturally aspirated. After a few stories back and forth, all of us went inside to eat.

It took my friend all night to shake off the adrenalin rush. Rookies, I tell ya....:)

it was sweet KRM!

i know i know i shouldnt have raced with that low mileage, but hey people i had too right?! just an update with the guy with the accord, he is getting a turbo with a custom manifold next week. well hopefully next time him and i meet we will go for conering instead. lol

Good story! :)
I usually say something about keeping it on the track here somewhere, but I am getting lazy I guess. Just be safe and have fun!!!

PS> Did you say 160 CRANK hp for the accord?? Damn, I have been driving Gas guzzling domestic V8's for way too long.... ;) I have yet to let myself look at the dyno thread of a stock P5. Oh well, it sure as hell carves out a corner. If you have any trouble with trying to race hondas like that accord, send them down this way... I don't remember when it was exactly, but I am damn near double the crank horsepower of that accord N/A in whp in my "other" car. (Easily doubled when *cough* Not N/A *cough*) ;)

Pretty sure it was crank, I could be mistaken. Either way its hella more powerful than either of our Pro5s.
