A couple questions from someone who is completely new to Mazda

2003 MazdaSpeed Proteg
To start, I'm new to all the JDM and Mazda stuff so please forgive me! I just bought a 2003 MazdaSpeed Protege; though it needs a little bit of work and elbow grease, I'm extremely pleased with it. The first thing I want to do is put a cold air intake and a BOV on it. I saw a guy yesterday and he told me that if I get an Injen CAI, it will have an adapter for a BOV and that I can leave the rest of the stock piping (for now), but still have a BOV. Unfortunately, the big plastic piece underneath the engine compartment has been removed and will not allow me to put a CAI in because if I drove in the rain, my intake would likely bog out. Does anyone know what this plastic piece is called, and where I may be able to find it? Also, does the part about the intake make sense? Like, would a BOV go on an intake? Should I maybe look into instead finding a short ram intake? If so, are there any short ram intakes that would be able to support a BOV? Maybe I could incorporate a BOV flange into an intake? Thanks a bunch for all your help, and I'm looking forward to becoming an active member of this community:D

Just don't use the second piece of the Injen and attach the filter directly to the maf, then you have a short ram... A BOV attaches to the cold pipe, not the intake, unless you are talking about the recirculation fitting, which is on the part of the Injen that goes from the turbo to the maf anyway.

the big plastic piece that goes under the engine is called the underbody cover. proteges only have one that protects the front bumper area, leaving most of the engine and oil pan exposed. newer mazdas have much larger ones which usually cover up the oil pan and or transmission (they claim its to protect from damage, but its main function is to cut down on the amount of warranty oil leak repairs as the covers keep oil from leaking on the ground which keeps the customer from realizing there is a problem)

Hmm. So I couldn't recirculate if I attached it to the cold pipe? It'd go to the atmosphere, correct? And if that's the case, is it preferable to release to the atmosphere or recirculate?

well it really isnt gonna do much in the way of protecting your car from hydrolock. like i said the underbody protection on a protege is minimal at best and you may be thinking there is a piece missing when there isnt. the only piece that comes with the car is the part that attaches directly to the underside of the front bumper.

You need the covers, they are actually more for aerodynamics than to cover up warranty claims. Trust me Mazda still does plenty of warranty work for leaks.
