A/C only works in position 1 & 4

this thread inspired me to go in and look for myself....and ....I FIXED IT....i have a/c blasting on all four settings....hurray!!!

wow. i didnt even realize it was last september that i took everything apart..i was thinking it was some time this spring....dayum....

just as an update, mine still works 95% of the time. every once in a while it will flicker at me, and all i do is pull the radio pocket out and push on the black ground wire, and all is happy again. so i'm pretty damn sure that wire is the problem. i'm just too lazy to try and figure out WHY its the problem.

Care to share HOW you fixed it?

not sure really i agree with mp3wannabe in that it must have something to do with the black ground, like it's not grounding well or something.
i disassembled the dash piece holding the control unit completely removed the control unit. than took the face plate off that( poped off both defrost button and a/c blew some canned air in there to get the dust off all the connections. i put the control unit back together and cleaned the connectors in the rear (where the wire harness plugs in). also there was a little black clip that was loose there the cable for the fan control was so i poped that back on(i don't think this was part of the prob as it was intact just loose). and when i tested it viola it worked. if all are curious on how to get it all apart i will try to make a how to tomarrow (i am at work now) but let me know i would be happy to do it but i don't want to waste my time though if noone is interested!!!

I've already taken apart my A/C unit, so I'll try that toniht.

I took my Control unit apart today to try to fix the A/C problem, (mine only turns on when set to 1 and 4), I sprayed down the control unit and everything with canned air to get the dust off, and made sure everything was tightened up, here's the kicker.... My A/C/ Switch works just fine on ALL settings when I have everything taken apart except the power header, but then when I put everything back together it only works on 1 and 4 again. What could be going on here? is it definately the ground wire? is it getting pinched when i push everything back in there? any ideas? Thanks.

Mine started doing it just the other day.

Anyone have the "updated" one that doesn't work?

Also if somone with the "updated" one could pull it apart and take a picture I could see if the boards are different.

Those of you who want a (possible) cheap solution, help me out; I'm pretty sure I figured out how to fix my situation, but I need to collect some data from other people who are still using all stock components.

If someone could, I need voltage readouts from Contact D on the HVAC connector harness. It is a BLUE/YELLOW wire.

Please measure the following with CAR RUNNING:
Fan Switch OFF
Position 1
Position 2
Position 3
Position 4

Please post your results here, or better yet, PM me.
Thanks.

Also if your still interested...
the servie manual says those voltages should be

Fan Switch OFF = B+
Position 1 = 0.12
Position 2 = 0.65
Position 3 = 0.60
Position 4 = 0.30

mine started doing it again a week ago. i was told it should be the fan resisitor it is a part for 26 dollars online (not the control unit $180). i have ordered it and should arrive tomorrow or thurs (says ups). it is an easy install and when i am done and if it works i will post links to buy the part and a how to...but only if it works!!!

Very cool if it works! keep us posted.

Trust me it's only temporary. Mine did the same thing but after a few drives it started getting screwy again. I could pop out the top of the console up by the vent and it would take the tension off of the cables which was apparently causing the short but electricity eventually found the its way and started shorting again. I was starting to get worried of something melting and causing a fire. I replaced the switch itself for $30 and nothing and dis-assembled the whole thing several times before spending the $30 at the junkyard. '03 or later model!

I just took my unit outand put it back in and it fixed the problem...

it is NOT the motor resisitor. installed the new piece and nothing.
i have decided to buy the control unit new. i feel this is not a part to buy used as the potential for the problem to resurface would exist.

:'( my hopes are crushed.. nah not really I only use the AC when it is raining and my windows fog up, and even then just because the car forces me to (I know there's a mod, just haven't gotten around to it).

so i just ordered the part from ken at protege garage his is the cheapest by about 10 and the shipping is included. for 180 all my ac needs will be fulfilled....i hope!
