74000 miles question

My son bought 08 Mzdaspeed with 74 000 miles on ticker.

We are still diagnosing it, but it's very likely having infamous timing chain start up rattle. Likely, VVT actuator noise too.

We priced the job at local Greg's Japanese Auto, and they balked out of it. Same time, guy told me that he called University Mazda in Seattle, and they told him there was a recall on those, and it still should be repaired at no cost by Mazda. Son called some dealership in Bellevue, which is the hosh posh area here, and they told him it's out of extended warranty and he has to pay.

Yes, I do know about 2 TSBs issued and extended to 70 000 miles warranty on those. My question is:

Is there really a recall? If yes, what's the number/date, etc? Did anyone have success having it done by Mazda with only couple thousand miles over the limit?

No there is no "Recall" on the part, I was corrected on this. That's why they offered the extended warranty to 70 months or 70k miles. I recently had mine repaired at the dealer. I had to call Mazda North American Operations in California to file a case about mine since I was second owner and failed within that period even tho I hadn't received my letter after the extended warranty was past. Best bet is to try and call, cant guarantee anything, might still say no. If you are to pay for it yourself, I recommend buying this one and having the dealer or find a reputable shop with experience to do it for you. It is not a DIY job and requires special Mazda tools. Dealer had my car for 3 days. Hope this helps and best of luck

How many mileage you have before you had it done?

They won't do it since your over 70k. A buddy was quoted $800ish for parts and labor for a new VVT from a Mazda dealer around here. I wouldn't have anyone other than mazda tackle the job.

That's why Greg's Japanese Auto balked. I found a shop here that does nothing but Mazdas, he's supposed to call me back tomorrow with quote. Says he's very well familiar with GDI turbocharged engines.
Thank you for link. CSU Street Unit has exactly same parts for slightly less, $75 tensioner and $139 actuator. Many shops refuse to install customer parts though, partly because of lost markup partly because of possible warranty liabilities.

I had mine done at 80k, even tho mine failed at 65k. I received my letter at 74k. I drive 20k plus miles a year hence the large gaps in between. The only leverage I had in my case was it failed within the original period. We currently own 4 Mazdas, 93 Truck 91 Miata 07 CX7 and 07 MS3, along with about 6 others in the past as well. My dad is employed by Mazda and were loyal to the brand. This was how I swayed their judgement, however it was still hard.

The difference in the street unit one is that its the oem one from Mazda. The Darrel Cox Racing one is modified to prevent failure again. Thats why it cost more.
