7.5 hr drive... silly question

This is a silly question, but I've never had a turbo before. I gotta take a 7.5 hr drive next week (longest trip to date with msp). The drive will probably avg 80mph, with hardly any stopping. Anything I should worry about? lol

Just turned 3K miles, and getting the oil change today.

Nope. On the highway your engine will stay cool. Just remember that 30 seconds of cool down time when you stop:D

it shoud be ok, i dont see any reasons for it to not be, i drove my msp 5h and it only had 2.5k on it, so youre shoud be fine

shouldn't have a problem, just remember to let it cool down. if you do have a problem, at least you have 24hr roadside assistance :)

You will be fine. Remember your engine is relatively new, so try to vary the RPMs a bit.

30second cool off is stupid on a 7..5hr trip....the rule of thumb is 1 minute for every hour of driving.....since our turbo's are oil and coolant cooled this could be cut in half. I would reccommend no less than 2 minutes cool off time after several hours of driving.

Turbo Matty P, you sure do have a way with words that puts folks on the defensive. Instead of saying that, "30second cool off is stupid on a 7..5hr trip," you could have just said here is what I recommend, and here is why, leaving out the :bs:

30 seconds cool down time is plenty for a 7.5/hr trip. Then again if you let it run for a 60/sec. that won't hurt either. Maybe you should get a turbo timer installed before you roll.

Uhh. What does "Every hour of driving" have to do with anything?

If you're cruising on the highway, at say 65 to 80 mph, low to no boost, you'll be at operating temp in a few minutes. It's not like everything progessively continues to get warmer the longer you drive.

If you're constantly boosting, sure, longer cool downs are appropriate, otherwise time of driving shouldn't have any effect on your cool down period.

At least that's my 2 cents.

Don't shut your engine off when you fill your gas, and then let it cool for 5 minutes as you unpack your luggage.

Linux....don't critique me on my use of the word "stupid" when there are people on this forum who create threads with the sole intention of insulting and degrading people. I was stating that driving your car at speeds of 80mph for 7.5 hours and only allowing 30secinds cool off time is STUPID. It is stupid. Sorry if it offended anyone, but it was bad advice. I let my P5 idle for at least a minute after a 4 hour cruise @ 80mph. It may be overkill, but I bet letting it idle won't coke oil in the turbo or cause heat to bust the exhaust manifold.

FWIW, turbo timer is a great invention. Very usefull and will deffinetly prolong your engine/turbo life.

I'm not sure about filling the gas tank while the car is running. I've owned too many cars that will throw CEL's if the gas cap is loose under operation. Most new fuel systems will register this as a weird vaccuum leak or whatnot.

EDIT- my spelling sucks and I don't care.

yeah, whenever I go on long drives I don't turn the car off if we have to stop, unless I need to fill up for gas. if I have to fill up for gas I let it idle for 3-4 minutes or so, then turn it off and fill up. after a long trip i let it idle for about 5 minutes before i turn it off. it can't hurt, so might as well. I agree with Turbo Matty P.

You make some great points and no one is arguing that turbo timers and cool down periods are great ideas. Synthetic oil won't coke in the line like Dino oil will (at least not without much higher temps)

A minute is a pretty good period. I used to let my old A4 idle with the door cracked. Once the door chime ended, you knew that your minute was up. Kind of like a built in cool down alarm. :)

I basically do cool downs under harder driving. If I'm just going one town over at 30mph for 5 miles, I'm not gonna bother. If I'm stomping on it for 5 miles, then yes, I'm gonna hang out and cool everything for a minute.

But then that's just me.

so far it seems that my advice isn't that bad now is it!!

I am very picky about vehicle maintaince and cool down on a turbo car is crucial to longevity. If you wanna keep it for a while then cool it off. If not, don't worry about it.

d, don't worry and have a safe trip. i has a blast at christmas when we went to MS. had to slow down in b'ham cause i was afraid matty might get me!!!! enjoy the ride!
