and I picked up some new speakers. they had some 6.5 inches which I got and they had some 6x9s both JBLs.

anyways, i'm not concerned about the rears. but the fronts I know are 5x7/6x8 in our babies but I was wondering if anyone has tried wrestling a 6x9 in there. And if yes, any comments? I know the depth (and width) on these I got are more than what we have available in front but i was thinking maybe with a spacer to move them out from the door and a little door chopping they would work.

anyways, what do you think? or perhaps just think it's a bad idea at all? I just noticed after getting home they have 6x8s on sale too. http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product...spx?path=743b0315f520eace0a859fe983a8ab51en02
but they look just so dinky compared to that 6x9 i got :D

I thought the p5s had 6.5s in the front and back doors? Either way I'm sure there's a bracket somewhere but either way your gona have to do some slight modding to it. If I was you id test fit it take a dremmel and cut down the sides where it doesn't fit and use some self tapping srews for the new holes then find some sort of sealent to put it in there between the speaker and bracket so it doesn't rattle. Also your probly gona have to take off the little black thing that covers them up.

Nooo sir on those speakers. I put the 6x8s in my brothers focus and they truly live up to the "Junk-But-Loud" JBL acronym. Get the Alpine Type-S, thats what we switched him over to and thats what I run, they're so much nicer. You could, however make 6x9s fit.

yeah I put a 6x9 in the front. I say 'a' because it was a LOT more cutting than I figured for. The bass was disappointing too - maybe too small a cavity behind it. I ended up templating the hole back to stock size. Ultimately, I actually moved my 6x9 mains to the rear shelf.

@357: I have Alpine Type-S 5x7's already. I'm quite disappointed with them, very clear highs, but thats about it. thats why I figured I would give the JBL's a try.

@rabid: why so much cutting, wasn't it just a matter of opening up the whole like an inch and a half?
what about depth did you have the window hitting the back of the speaker?

I like JBL and I think Alpine are junk but I run Infinity, probably one of the best for the money. I went with the 6x8s though, i'm not crazy about how a 6x9 sounds.

I've heard good things about infinity, just haven't seen anything on sale.

Whats the difference you notice between the 6x8's and the 6x9's?

When I cut the 6x9 I ran into real thick metal at the front. Also cut off the window track and had to bolt it back in. Real mess. I should have cut more off towards the back. But as I say it wasn't worth it.

You should be able to order some Infinity reference 6x8s for very close to the same price as those JBLs if you go through an online retailer like sonicelectronix or something

I would highly suggest checking a place like Parts-express.com or Madisound and going with some much higher value 6.5" speakers and getting a conversion plate. Very little of what is available by the mass market companies that is in the lesser expensive range, is not what it used to be. And a little bit of searching can yield smaller brands of great performance and/or value. :)

I am runnin JLs all around. Just stock size for the car. I have a sub in I don't need the lows to come from the speakers.

^x2. Goood advice.

thanks for all the input folks. I ended up putting in the stock sized speakers all around (JBLs) I sat there looking at ways of opening up the holes for the 6x9s but it was just much more work than it was worth. (as Rabid mentioned :P) im quite satisfied with the end result.

next step, Sub + Amp

Thanks for all the input!

Make sure you are all looking at the amount of power needed to push those JBL and Alpines. A lot of aftermarket speakers have "no lows" because you really need good clean power running to them, not just headunit power. Try a 2 channel small amp and it'll make those things jump. Plus, you need to dynamat the doors. did that on my P5 and it made a difference in low output.

+1 for component Round speakers. 5.25" components will rock your world if given good power. 'Just' going bigger is not always better.

speaking of dynamat, I put some on the front doors, Didn't have enough for the rears.

the head unit I have is max at 45w per channel the speakers are rated at max 60w RMS. (max 100w)
