6x8 front and 6x8 rears in a protege 5?

I know that the protege 5 has 5x7, which can be replaced by 6x8 in the front, and 6" in the rear that can be replaced with 6.5 if you cut the weather gaurd. But why when I ask a place like best buy do the tell me that my car takes 6x8 all the way around?

crutchfield said the same thing and so did pioneer...dunno if that requires modification or not...anyone?

6x8 and 5x7 do not drop in the rear of a Protege5, however they will fit in the rear of a Mazda3. Given enough time and effort you can fit just about any speaker in any door, but if you are looking for "drop-in" replacements for your Protege5, stick with 5x7/6x8 for the front and 5.25/6/6.5 for the rear.

And for the record, the people at Best Buy get on-the-job training. If you value your vehicle, do the installation yourself instead of taking it to them. They have experience tearing apart early 90's Honda Civics in their friend's driveway but not much else.

...and also for the record. If you select a Mazda Protege5 on Crutchfield's site, they will limit your rear speaker selection to 5.25, 6, and 6.5 inch speakers.

direct from crutchfield as of now:

2002 Mazda Protege5 Station Wagon

Factory replacement info:

In-dash stereo
6-7/16" depth; Size code DD,E

Front speakers
Front Door:
* 5 1/4 (37)
* 5X7 (19)
* 6 3/4 (7)
* 6x8 ( 10)

Rear speakers
Rear Door:
* 5 1/4 (35)
* 6 1/2 (5)

That is what will fit...not necessarily what will drop in. 5x7/6x8 is the only size that drops into the front perfectly. The rears are 6" so I think you'll have to drill new holes for 5-1/4 and 6-1/2.

yeah i found out the hard way, got 6x8's up front and had to leave the old speakers in the rear. However because i like how my 6x8's sound i will be modifying my rear door to accommodate my 6x8.
