626 Manifold Install Questions

I have been searching for information on the install of the 626 IM. I may not be able to search well or something becasue I could not find a thread that detailed the install. I have a IM from a 2001 626 with the EGR and the injectors, fuel rails throttle body and all vacuum pieces. Is this a direct bolt on with all of these pieces? I need to get this installed as a few bits are failing on my stock manifold that will be replaced with the new 626 IM. Thanks for any help. If there is a thread with someone detailing install I would appreciate a link to this.

The manifold will bolt right up, and the 2001 626 EGR pipe should also be able to bolt up to the Protege exhaust manifold just fine (the 2000 pipes bend differently on the exhaust side but the 01-02 ones are just like the Protege one), but I don't know about the fuel rail and throttle body. I would use the Protege ones just to be safe, it's what I have on mine and there are no leaks or other problems. You will also need to get creative with the vacuum lines, as the 626 manifold doesn't have as many ports as the Protege.. I used a vacuum block to help things out.

You'll also need to re-route the brake booster line as the nipple on the manifold is placed in a different spot. Also, the bracket that holds the manifold from below doesn't line up perfectly. I used a couple washers between the block and the bracket to push it out a bit, and that allowed me to bolt it up to the 626 manifold easier.

Good luck!

Great info, Im planning to install a 2001 626 IM on my protege. Will i need the IM bracket from the 626 or can I use my existing protege bracket? Do you have pics of your install?

What did you do about the VICS/VTCS solenoids?

Jp

The bracket fits fine, the manifolds are basically the same. He probably didn't loosen the bottom two bolts for the bracket to adjust it to fit the IM. Any reason for changing to a 626 IM? If it has the VTCS and VICS its effectively the same as stock.

Thanks, it doesnt have vics and vtcs. I was just wondering what to do with the stock harness. Just leave it unplugged? or plug it in as a dummy solenoid?

Leave the solenoids plugged into the harness to avoid a CEL. IMO a manifold with VICS is better than the 626 without flaps.

You can bend the EGR tube if it doesn't fit but as it says above 01-02 626 EGR pipes fit the protege.

I know people that used 01+ 626 egr tube and they complained that the thread pitch is different.

So what is the issue? Go get a gas line from a hardware store.

Or just delete your VTCS and keep your stock mani.

There is no issue with the 01-02 626 EGR pipes, it's what I used on mine and it bolted up perfectly. In fact, Protege Garage used to offer it as an additional option when they sold this as a product. It's the 2000 model manifolds and pipes that don't fit.

As far as the bracket goes, you can reuse the Protege one, but you'll need a couple washers between it and the manifold to make it sit flush. When you secure the Protege bracket to the back of the block, it will be just barely shy of reaching the manifold, so that's where the washers come in.

And as stated above, leave the VICS and VTCS solenoids plugged in. You don't need to run vacuum lines to them, but you should keep the harnesses plugged in to keep you from getting a CEL.

Thank you for confirming. I will get myself an EGR pipe to keep it oem looking.

You can also cap the exhaust mani and cut the egr pipe to put a filter on it so it draws fresh air instead of exhaust. Will probably register as a vacuum leak to the ECU but I have seen it done.

Can't have any CEL or codes in order to pass emissions test here.

Off topic question. But is there a Facebook group for msps?

Yes, go on FB and search. Beware, as is typical for fb lots of people ask realllly stupid questions and it frequently makes me feel less intelligent when I log on.

This won't cause a CEL, I used to run that setup before I got my hands on an 01 625 EGR pipe.. works like a charm. You won't get a vacuum leak as long as the EGR valve itself stays plugged in and functional.

If the EGR is vented to atmosphere it will register as a vacuum leak. May not throw a CEL but (as i'm sure you know) any unmetered air entering after the MAF and before the primary O2 is a leak.
