626 MAF Sensor problem

Greetings All, This is my first post so I hope you all can help me. I recently bought a 1991 Mazda 626 LX for cheap. The car was in great shape and it was basically a wealthy family wanting to get rid of the high school kids car. It had new everything on it and was garage kept. It ran perfect exept at idle it was a little rough but not bad. I was told that the MAF needed cleaning, but I made a mistake of removing the screws and pulling out what looked like components of the sensor.

I got a new MAF and replaced it, but the car now immediately dies at idle. Cranks and runs fine but dies when clutch is in for more than 2 seconds. It has to be something to do with the MAF because the car wasnt stalling out before i removed the original and damaged it. Ive tried disconecting the negative on the battery to try and reset, but same thing still happens.... Also the check engine light comes on and off when it is running... When I discount the MAF and crank it the CEL comes on immidiately....... ANY HELP!!!!

P.S Im mad at myself for pulling out the component in the first place ahhhhh

Thanks for your help

Ross
